Synthesis and fabrication of biobased thermoplastic polyurethane filament for FDM 3D printing

Eun Joo Shin et al.

Summary: This study discusses the fabrication and properties of a soft-actuator grade thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with a hardness of 73 to 86 shore A. Using bio-based synthesized materials, TPU filaments suitable for FDM 3D printing were produced. The experimental results show that the bio-synthesized HP 3.0 with a hardness of 82 shore A is the most suitable for this type of printing.

Photo-Cross-Linked Poly(trimethylene carbonate)/Poly(ε-caprolactone) Triblock Copolymers with Controlled Architectures: From Phase-Separated Structures to Shape-Memory Materials

Nikola Toshikj et al.

Summary: Efficient and rapid organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization was used to synthesize PTMC-b-PCL-b-PTMC block copolymers, with controlled architectures achieved through an additional cross-linking step. The crystalline-driven phase-separated morphology predominated, and the cross-linked thin films exhibited shape-memory properties, while remaining stable with access to thermodynamic phase-separated morphologies below the poly(epsilon-caprolactone) melting point.

UV Reconfigurable Shape Memory Polyurethane with a High Recovery Ratio under Large Deformation

Jing Hu et al.

Summary: A new type of shape memory thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was developed in this research, with photoresponsive anthracene groups incorporated into the hard segment to control stability and recoverability. This material achieved a high shape-fixing/recovery ratio and good performance even under large deformation, as well as free construction of three-dimensional shapes through photodimerization of anthracene groups.

4D-printed bi-material composite laminate for manufacturing reversible shape-change structures

Yanan Wang et al.

Summary: A low-cost method for reversible structural deformation using 4D printing is proposed, combining TPU and PLA materials with mathematical modeling to analyze the feasibility and requirements of the composite laminate structures. The experimental and simulation results show consistency in deformation trends, demonstrating the broad application prospects of this strategy in reversible 4D printing.

Structural and Viscoelastic Properties of Thermoplastic Polyurethanes Containing Mixed Soft Segments with Potential Application as Pressure Sensitive Adhesives

Monica Fuensanta et al.

Summary: Thermoplastic polyurethanes were synthesized using blends of poly(propylene glycol) and poly(1,4-butylene adipate) polyols, with different NCO/OH ratios. The results showed that increasing the NCO/OH ratio improved the miscibility of the soft segments and decreased phase separation, leading to potential application as pressure sensitive adhesives. The experimental results also demonstrated good agreement with predicted values for tack and peel strength.
