Salinity Mixing and Diahaline Exchange Flow in a Large Multi-Outlet Estuary with Islands

Xiangyu Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between salinity mixing, diffusive salt transport, and diahaline exchange flow using salinity coordinates. The results show that in the Pearl River Estuary, the diahaline exchange flow is similar to classical estuarine exchange flow and is influenced by salinity; intensified salinity mixing occurs mainly in surface layers and around islands in summer, while it mainly occurs in deep channels in winter.
