lncR26319/miR-2834/EndophilinA axis regulates oogenesis of the silkworm, Bombyx mori

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: Oocyte maturation is crucial for insect reproduction, and vitellogenin production and uptake are key factors for female fecundity. In the silkworm, a lncRNA called lncR26319 regulates Vg endocytosis through competitive binding to miR-2834 and modulation of EndoA expression. The lncR26319-miR-2834-EndoA axis plays a critical role in the normal progression of oogenesis in the silkworm and could be targeted for pest management strategies.

Labor division of worker ants can be controlled by insulin synthesis targeted through miR-279c-5p in Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: This study identifies a new mechanism for regulating worker division of labor in ants. The miR-279c-5p negatively regulates the Rab8A gene to control insulin production and behavioral transitions. This mechanism is important for understanding the behavioral plasticity of social insects and could potentially be used to control red imported fire ants.

Exotic Ants of the Asia-Pacific: Invasion, National Response, and Ongoing Needs

Yijuan Xu et al.

Summary: Human activity has introduced numerous exotic species through global trade, making the Asia-Pacific region, with its economic and trade activity, highly vulnerable to invasive species, particularly ants. The Asia-Pacific currently has over 60 exotic ant species, with the red imported fire ant being one of the most destructive. These exotic ants bring about significant economic and ecological problems to the region. Asian-Pacific countries have approached the issue of exotic ants in varying ways, with an overall lack of preparedness. To better manage the risks associated with invasive ants, it is recommended that countries take action in prevention, containment, and quarantine. Establishing an Asia-Pacific network for managing invasive ants can help prevent their introduction and mitigate their impacts.

Role of the foraging gene in worker behavioral transition in the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The for (Sifor) gene plays a critical role in the behavioral transition between foragers and nurses of red imported fire ants. The expression patterns of Sifor and PKG vary in different castes, body sizes, ages, and tissues of fire ants. RNA interference-mediated Sifor knockdown induces the transition of foragers toward the nurse phenotype, while PKG activation results in the transition of nurses toward the forager phenotype.

Summary: This study identified the key role of specific GPCRs in vitellogenesis and oocyte maturation in the migratory locust through transcriptomic analysis and RNA interference screening. These findings provide fundamental evidence for understanding the regulatory mechanisms of GPCRs in JH-stimulated insect reproduction.

Genome-wide identification of target genes for transcription factor BR-C in the silkworm, Bombyx mori

Meng-Pei Guo et al.

Summary: The study identified BR-C target genes in silkworm through ChIP-seq, revealing their involvement in biosynthetic, metabolic, and developmental pathways. Transcriptome analysis and real-time PCR confirmed similarities in expression patterns between some potential BR-C targets and BR-C. ChIP-PCR validation and luciferase assays further demonstrated BR-C's direct binding to target gene promoters and its regulatory role in insect growth and development.

The microRNA miR-14 Regulates Egg-Laying by Targeting EcR in Honeybees (Apis mellifera)

Xiao Chen et al.

Summary: Honeybees are important pollinators commonly used for honey production. Errors in oviposition behavior could affect colony development. The study shows that miR-14 and EcR play significant roles in egg-laying, with their interaction influencing the number of eggs laid by honeybee queens.
