Role of Noncovalent Interactions in Inducing High Enantioselectivity in an Alcohol Reductive Deoxygenation Reaction Involving a Planar Carbocationic Intermediate

Supratim Ghosh et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism of a chiral Ir-phosphoramidite-catalyzed asymmetric reductive deoxygenation reaction was investigated using density functional theory. It was found that Bi(OTf)3 promotes ionic and noncovalent interactions, which play a crucial role in nucleophile selectivity.

Practical and General Alcohol Deoxygenation Protocol

Oliver P. Williams et al.

Summary: In this study, a practical protocol for removing alcohol functional groups through reductive cleavage of their benzoate ester analogs is described. The transformation requires a strong single electron transfer (SET) reductant and a method to accelerate slow fragmentation after substrate reduction. A photocatalytic system was developed to generate a potent reductant from formate salts with Bronsted or Lewis acids that promote fragmentation. This deoxygenation procedure is effective for diverse alcohols and enables various transformations.

Dehydroxylative Sulfonylation of Alcohols

Yi-Jun Xiang et al.

Summary: Described here is a dehydroxylative sulfonylation method using R3P/ICH2CH2I as a promoter to convert alcohols into sulfonyl compounds. Unlike previous methods that are limited to active alcohols, our protocol can be applied to both active and inactive alcohols (alkyl alcohols). Various sulfonyl groups, including CF3SO2 and HCF2SO2, can be incorporated, which are of interest in pharmaceutical chemistry. The reaction is completed within 15 minutes, and the reagents used are cheap and readily available.

Accessing para-Alkylphenols via Iridium-Catalyzed Site-Specific Deoxygenation of Alcohols

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: An iridium-catalyzed and phenol-directed deoxygenation method is described for the synthesis of 4-alkylphenols, which offers low catalyst loading, high functionality compatibility, and excellent site-selectivity. The applications in late-stage modification of steroids and gram-scale total synthesis of a Gastrodia elata extract are also highlighted. Mechanistically, the interemediacy of quinone methide controls the site-selectivity, and the formation of iridium hydride serves as the rate-limiting step.

Selective C-O Hydrogenolysis of Terminal C-OH Bond in 1,2-Diols over Rutile-Titania-Supported Iridium-Iron Catalysts

Ben Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a regioselective catalyst was developed for the hydrogenolysis of 1,2-butanediol (1,2-BuD) to produce 2-butanol (2-BuOH) from biomass. The addition of iron to the catalyst improved both the activity and selectivity, and the reusability of the catalyst was enhanced through optimization of the preparation method. The catalyst showed high selectivity not only in the hydrogenolysis of 1,2-BuD, but also in the hydrogenolysis of other related alcohols.

Nickel-Catalyzed Reductive Deoxygenation of Diverse C-O Bond-Bearing Functional Groups

Adam Cook et al.

Summary: A catalytic method for direct deoxygenation of various C-O bond-containing functional groups is reported. The reaction, using a Ni(II) pre-catalyst and silane reducing agent, selectively reduces alcohols, epoxides, ethers, aldehydes, and ketones to their corresponding alkanes while leaving other functional groups untouched. Practical applications in catalytic deuteration, benzyl ether deprotection, and valorization of biomass-derived feedstocks demonstrate the versatility of this methodology.
