Fatigue and intermediate-temperature cracking performance of rejuvenated recycled asphalt binders and mixtures: A review

Mohsen Alae et al.

Summary: Incorporating reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) with a rejuvenator can improve the fatigue performance of the mixture. However, the effectiveness of rejuvenators in enhancing fatigue resistance varies due to different types and dosages of rejuvenators, RAP sources and percentages, and testing methods. A comprehensive literature review and laboratory study are conducted to understand the rejuvenation mechanism and evaluate the impact of rejuvenators on RAP binder and mixture. It is found that polymer modification can significantly improve the fatigue performance of rejuvenated RAP materials, but a consistent indicator for determining fatigue resistance is lacking.

Evaluating the effects of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and polyphosphoric acid (PPA) on asphalt adhesion performance

Yajin Han et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the influences of SBR, PPA, and SBR&PPA on the adhesion performance of base asphalt. The results show that the dosages of SBR and PPA have a significant impact on the adhesion performance of the asphalt binder and its mixture. At the nanoscale, PPA and SBR modifiers can improve the adhesion force of base asphalt. At the asphalt scale, both modifiers enhance the surface free energy of base asphalt. At the asphalt-aggregate and mixture scales, the SBR modifier significantly enhances the pull-off strength and dry tensile strength of the asphalt. Considering the moisture damage resistance, the asphalt modified with 1.5% SBR&2% PPA is recommended.
