Effect of biochar incorporation on phosphorus supplementation and availability in soil: a review

Yangxiaoxiao Shi et al.

Summary: Biochar can increase the available phosphorus in soil and alter soil properties, leading to changes in phosphorus forms and availability. Additionally, biochar can enhance soil biota and phosphatase activity, promoting phosphorus solubilization and mineralization. However, the efficiency of biochar is influenced by the properties of the biochar and the amended soil, as well as cultivation strategies.

Nitrogen availability in biochar-based fertilizers depending on activation treatment and nitrogen source

Raill Castejon-del Pino et al.

Summary: Different activation and N-doping treatments were used to produce biochar-based fertilizers (BBFs) with increased N concentration and slow N release. The activation of low-temperature biochars with nitric acid was the most effective treatment, leading to new surface carboxylic groups that facilitated N enrichment. Urea treatment resulted in BBFs with the highest N content, while hydrogen peroxide activation only allowed a limited increase in N concentration. The presence of water-soluble, hydrolyzable, and non-hydrolyzable N fractions in the BBFs suggests their potential as slow-release fertilizers.

Ibad Ullah et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of wood biochar and different fertilizer combinations on wheat yield and soil properties. The results showed that applying 75% NPK + 5 ton biochar per hectare resulted in the highest wheat yield and improved soil properties. However, applying a large amount of biochar did not enhance yield or soil properties.

Biochar-based fertilizer effects on crop productivity: a meta-analysis

Leonidas Carrijo Azevedo Melo et al.

Summary: The study shows that biochar-based fertilizers (BBFs) can increase crop productivity at very low application rates compared to conventional fertilizers. Cluster analysis reveals the potential of BBFs to enhance crop productivity in soils that are not responsive to conventional fertilizers. Additionally, BBFs produced at higher heating temperatures and with higher carbon content have a more pronounced effect on crop yield.

Combined effects of biochar and fertilizer applications on yield: A review and meta-analysis

Shahla Hosseini Bai et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of the combined application of biochar and fertilizers on crop yield. The meta-analysis of 57 published articles suggests that both biochar and inorganic fertilizer can individually increase crop yield. However, the co-application of biochar with fertilizers shows the highest yield increase, especially in acidic soils. The temperature of biochar production and the C:N ratio also influence its effectiveness.

Efficiency of Phosphorus Fertilizers Derived from Recycled Biogas Digestate as Applied to Maize and Ryegrass in Soils with Different pH

Inga-Mareike Bach et al.

Summary: This study tested three phosphorus fertilizers recycled from biogas digestates and found that they are effective alternatives to mineral TSP for maize cultivation under acidic and neutral soil conditions. In neutral soil, organic P fertilizers increased maize biomass by almost double compared to TSP, and in acidic soil, they increased the phosphorus concentration and total phosphorus content in maize plants. The growth of ryegrass was not affected by any phosphorus fertilizers, indicating that weed control does not need to be changed with recycled P fertilizers.
