Summary: As more genomic data becomes available for nonmodel taxa, it is evident that gene flow across species barriers in insects is more common than previously believed. Recent advances in long-read sequencing technology have made it possible to assemble high-quality reference genomes and chromosome maps for nonmodel insects, allowing us to study ancient and recent hybridization and gene flow. The implications of hybridization in insect species adaptation are potentially positive, but the anthropogenic actions have led to certain pest species benefiting from hybridization and gene flow, which may facilitate future invasions.
