Ligand-Assisted Formation of Soluble Mn(III) and Bixbyite-like Mn2O3 by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32

Di Min et al.

Summary: Functional material synthesis through biomineralization is an effective and environmentally friendly method. Biomineralized manganese (Mn) oxides play important roles in remediation and energy storage. In this study, it is demonstrated that the dissimilatory manganese-reducing bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 can oxidize Mn(II) in the presence of oxygen. The oxidation reaction is mainly associated with a cell-free filtrate, and the indirect oxidation of Mn(II) into soluble Mn(III) and bixbyite-like Mn2O3 is mediated by microbially produced extracellular ligands.

Whole cell evaluation and the enzymatic kinetic study of urease from ureolytic bacteria affected by potentially toxic elements

Weila Li et al.

Summary: This study identified a ureolytic bacterium, Lysinibacillus sp. GY3, isolated from an E-waste site, as a promising catalyst for remediation of heavy metals through the Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) process. The bacterium produced significant amounts of urease and showed high stability in the presence of potentially toxic elements. Compared to the reference strain, Bacillus megaterium VS1, Lysinibacillus sp. GY3 demonstrated higher extracellular urease activity. Additionally, the isolated microorganism exhibited the most stable urease activity under metal pressure conditions. These findings suggest that Lysinibacillus sp. GY3 has potential for stabilizing complex heavy metal pollutants in the MICP process.

Comparative transcriptomic analysis of Stenotrophomonas sp. MNB17 revealed mechanisms of manganese tolerance at different concentrations and the role of histidine biosynthesis in manganese removal

Fuhang Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of Mn(II) removal by bacteria and identifies the upregulation of histidine biosynthesis and oxidative stress response as important features. The increased level of reactive oxygen species is found to contribute to the formation of Mn-oxides. The addition of histidine enhances Mn(II) removal. These findings provide novel insights into the molecular regulatory mechanisms associated with Mn(II) removal in bacteria.

Kangjie Li et al.

Summary: This study for the first time demonstrated that manganese-oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas sp. F2 can effectively degrade OFL in water environments, with the degradation relying on biogenic manganese oxides and Mn(III) intermediates. Additionally, the decreased degradation when microbial activity was inactivated highlights the importance of bioactivity in the degradation process.

Efficient removal of nitrate, manganese, and tetracycline by a polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate with sponge cube immobilized bioreactor

Qiao Chang et al.

Summary: In this study, a denitrifying and manganese-oxidizing Zoogloea Q7 bacterium was immobilized in a reactor using polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate with sponge cube. The optimal operation parameters of the bioreactor were explored to achieve high removal efficiencies of nitrate, Mn(II), and tetracycline (TC). Fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses confirmed the high activity of the microorganisms in the bioreactor, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the bioprecipitate mainly consisted of MnO2 and MnCO3. Through high-throughput analysis, Zoogloea sp. Q7 was identified as the dominant bacteria in the reactor.

Ureolytic bacteria from electronic waste area, their biological robustness against potentially toxic elements and underlying mechanisms

Weila Li et al.

Summary: Ureolytic bacteria isolated from an E-waste area exhibited significant heavy metal resistance and potential for immobilizing toxic elements. The study revealed a novel metabolic system in these bacteria for heavy metal resistance and offered insights into the mechanism of heavy metal immobilization. The results indicate the promising environmental applications of these bacteria for addressing heavy metal contamination in electronic waste sites.
