Uncovering strengthening and softening mechanisms of nano-twinned CoCrFeCuNi high entropy alloys by molecular dynamics simulation

T. Z. Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of twin boundary spacing and nickel concentration on the mechanical properties and deformation behavior of nano-twinned HEA through molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that the decrease in twin boundary spacing causes the average flow stress of the HEA to change from strengthening to softening, and the nickel concentration can also affect the mechanical properties of the HEA.

Size effects and plastic deformation mechanisms in single-crystalline CoCrFeNi micro/nanopillars

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: As a new class of revolutionary alloy materials, high entropy alloys (HEAs) have been extensively studied due to their unique composition, microstructures, and superior mechanical properties. This study focused on the deformation behavior and mechanisms of HEA single crystals at the micro/nanoscale, revealing different size effects and deformation mechanisms in crystals with different orientations, providing insights for the design and fabrication of high-strength HEAs with remarkable plasticity.

Effect of strain rate and temperature on deformation and recrystallization behaviour of BCC structure AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy

Ali Arab et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of AlCoCrFeNi High-Entropy Alloys (HEAs) were studied under different strain rates and temperatures. Results showed that increasing the strain rate at all temperatures led to an increase in flow stress. No dynamic recrystallization occurred, but transgranular cracks were observed in the tested samples, with the number of cracks decreasing as the temperature increased. Under high temperature quasi-static conditions, a DRX microstructure with unrecrystallized coarse structure and necklace morphology was observed.

Dynamic response of high-entropy alloys to ballistic impact

Yunqing Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ballistic resistances of two high-entropy alloys, CrMnFeCoNi and CrFeCoNi, and reveals that the presence of active dislocations generated at higher strain rates significantly contributes to their ability to resist high-speed deformation. The alloy with stronger atomic bonding and higher dislocation densities, CrFeCoNi, exhibits enhanced toughness and ballistic resistance compared to CrMnFeCoNi, which has weaker atomic bonding and is more prone to dislocation tangling.

A perspective on investigating transition metal high-entropy alloys for high-temperature applications

Meifeng Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a feasible strategy to identify the high-temperature oxidation behaviors of transition metal high-entropy alloys (TM HEAs) through experimental investigation and density-functional theory (DFT) calculation. The results show that the gradual replacement of Cu with Al reduces the oxidation rate of TM HEAs and theoretical calculations reveal the phenomenon of sluggish diffusion in high-entropy systems.

Deformation mechanism and tensile properties of nanocrystalline CoCrCuFeNi high-entropy alloy: a molecular dynamics simulation study

Anh-Son Tran

Summary: The tension experiment simulations on nanocrystalline CoCrCuFeNi high-entropy alloy investigated the effects of grain size, strain rate, experiment temperature, and percentage of components on the damage mechanism and tensile properties. By changing the simulated conditions, the deformation, grain growth, and important mechanical factors like phase transformation and stress-strain relation were analyzed and discussed in-depth.

The effect of Cu and Mn elements on the mechanical properties of single-crystal CoCrFeNi-based high-entropy alloy under nanoindentation

Yuming Qi et al.

Summary: The impact of chemical compositions on the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of single-crystal FCC CoCrFeNi-based high-entropy alloys was investigated through molecular dynamics simulation in nanoindentation. The addition of Cu and Mn elements influences the stacking faults energy and dislocation-mediated deformation. The total number of chemical compositions plays a critical role in the results, showing significant effects on plastic deformation, indentation force and hardness of the high-entropy alloys.

Deformation Mechanisms and Remarkable Strain Hardening in Single-Crystalline High-Entropy-Alloy Micropillars/Nanopillars

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: Limited studies have been conducted on plastic deformation mechanisms in single-crystalline high-entropy alloys with body-centered cubic phases. Experimental results have shown significant size effects on yield/flow stress and remarkable strain hardening in these HEA micropillars/nanopillars, especially those with<100> orientation. Dislocation slip, reaction, tangling, accumulation, and solid solution effects contribute to the observed size effects on yield/flow stress and strain hardening, but these mechanisms depend on nanopillar orientation.

Gradient cell-structured high-entropy alloy with exceptional strength and ductility

Qingsong Pan et al.

Summary: By introducing gradient nanoscaled dislocation cell structures in stable single-phase HEAs, enhanced strength can be achieved without apparent loss of ductility. The gradient structure induces the formation of high-density tiny stacking faults and twins, contributing to improved plasticity, increased strength, and work hardening.
