Novel porous phosphoric acid-based geopolymer foams for adsorption of Pb (II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) mixtures: Behavior and mechanism

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, novel porous phosphoric acid activated geopolymer foams (PAG) with an open cell structure were synthesized using a simple and effective process. The PAG samples exhibited macropores and micro-cracks on the geopolymer matrix. Various analytical instruments were used to analyze the structural evolution. The PAG showed high efficiency in removing heavy metals from metal solutions, with maximum removal occurring at pH = 7.

Clinoptilolite based zeolite-geopolymer hybrid foams: Potential application as low-cost sorbents for heavy metals

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a simple method to prepare clinoptilolite-based zeolite-geopolymer foams. The obtained material possesses micropores of zeolite and meso/macropores of geopolymer matrix, and shows good static sorption performance for toxic heavy metals. The adsorption amounts for Cr3+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ are 6.21 mg/g, 6.11-6.13 mg/g, 5.92-6.07 mg/g, 5.53-5.93 mg/g, and 5.44-5.79 mg/g, respectively.

Compressive strength and heavy metal adsorption of cork residue, natural zeolite, and low-grade metakaolin-based geopolymers

Alcina Johnson Sudagar et al.

Summary: Low-grade Portuguese metakaolin, natural zeolite, and waste cork residue were tested as replacements for commercial MK-based geopolymers. The addition of zeolite and cork residue affected the structure, morphology, and properties of the geopolymers. The Portuguese MK geopolymers showed high adsorption capacities for divalent and trivalent metal cations.

Synthesis of industrial solid wastes based geopolymer foams for building energy conservation: Effects of metallic aluminium and reclaimed materials

Shengwei Shen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the feasibility of using industrial solid wastes for the preparation of sustainable geopolymer foams. The effects of aluminium powder content and substitution ratio of reclaimed materials on the performance of the foams were investigated. The results showed that by incorporating a small dosage of Al powder and using reclaimed materials, geopolymer foams with good mechanical properties and thermal conductivity were successfully produced.

Alkali treatment to transform natural clinoptilolite into zeolite Na-P: Influence of NaOH concentration

Cheng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, natural clinoptilolite was treated with different concentrations of NaOH solutions and evaluated for its ability to remove heavy metal ions. The results showed that the composition, structure, and capability of removal of heavy metal ions were significantly influenced by the NaOH concentrations. The samples treated with NaOH had lower SiO2/Al2O3 ratios and outperformed unmodified natural zeolite in removing heavy metal ions.

Yurdakul Aygormez

Summary: The study investigated the use of clay and zeolite as binders in geopolymer production through substitution experiments in different proportions, showing that zeolite performed better in geopolymer with higher strength, while the use of fly ash had a positive impact on the performance of geopolymer.

Effect of interlayer cations on montmorillonite swelling: Comparison between molecular dynamic simulations and experiments

Kenji Yotsuji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the crystalline swelling behavior of montmorillonite with different interlayer cations using molecular dynamics simulations and experimental measurements. Results showed that hydration free energy of interlayer cations and their coordination mode play a crucial role in the swelling behavior. The preference of outer- or inner-sphere complex of interlayer cations and the distribution of cations also significantly impact the swelling behavior.
