Development of the new pH-driven carrier from alginate/carboxymethyl starch bio-coated co-drugs@COF-OH for controlled and concomitant colon cancer treatment

Malihe Pooresmaeil et al.

Summary: In order to develop a more efficient colon cancer treatment bio-vehicle, a unique colon-targeted bio-carrier containing polysaccharides and nanoporous materials was designed for the first time. An imine-based covalent organic framework (COF-OH) was fabricated with an average pore diameter and surface area of 8.5058 nm and 208.29 m(2)center dot g(-1) respectively. 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) and curcumin (CUR) were loaded on COF-OH, and a polysaccharide coat was applied to control drug release in different simulated gastrointestinal environments.

Accelerated performance recovery of anaerobic granular sludge after temperature shock: Rapid construction of protective barriers (EPS) to optimize microbial community composition base on quorum sensing

Longyi Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigated the enhancement of temperature shock resistance in anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) by regulating quorum sensing (QS) through the addition of N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs). The results showed that the addition of 10 μM AHLs significantly improved the COD removal and methanogenic activity of AnGS, reduced recovery time, and attenuated sludge breakage induced by temperature shock. Exogenous AHLs also increased the concentration of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and promoted the enrichment of major functional bacteria and methanogens in AnGS. The increased EPS provided protection for microbial community optimization and led to rapid recovery of AnGS performance. This study provides new insights into the regulatory mechanisms of AHLs-mediated QS in AnGS.

Effect of external carbon addition and enrofloxacin on the denitrification and microbial community of sequencing batch membrane reactor treating synthetic mariculture wastewater

Xue Zhang et al.

Summary: The effect of sequencing batch membrane bioreactor (SMBR) on external carbon addition and enrofloxacin in treating synthetic mariculture wastewater was investigated. It was found that anoxic/anaerobic conditions and low COD/TN can improve ammonia oxidation and achieve high NH4+-N removal efficiency. Adding external carbon and creating an anoxic environment can provide a suitable condition for denitrifying bacteria. Enrofloxacin was found to promote TN removal efficiency and have a significant impact on specific bacteria.

Effect of amino acids on free exopolysaccharide biosynthesis by Streptococcus thermophilus 937 in chemically defined medium

Yunchao Wa et al.

Summary: Increasing the concentrations of histidine, isoleucine, and glutamate can significantly enhance the production of free exopolysaccharide (f-EPS) and the viability of Streptococcus thermophilus cells. This increase is achieved by up-regulating the transcription of EPS biosynthesis genes and enhancing the activity of key enzymes involved in sugar nucleotide synthesis. Furthermore, the higher concentrations of histidine, isoleucine, and glutamate result in increased lactose consumption and decreased galactose secretion, indicating the improved production of f-EPS.

The effects of different temperature conditions on sludge characteristics and microbial communities of nitritation denitrification

Ziang Su et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different temperature conditions on nitritation denitrification. The results showed that stepwise cooling facilitated a faster start-up of the process and achieved higher nitrite accumulation compared to continuous low temperature conditions. Additionally, lower temperatures significantly inhibited denitrification activity.

Exploring the feasibility and potential mechanism of synergistic enhancement of sludge dewaterability by ultrasonic cracking, chitosan re-flocculation and sludge-based biochar adsorption of water-holding substances

Yahong Yang et al.

Summary: A method combining ultrasonic cracking, chitosan re-flocculation, and sludge-based biochar adsorption was proposed to enhance sludge dewatering. This combined conditioning significantly improved the filtration performance of sludge, reducing specific resistance to filtration, capillary suction time, and cake moisture content. The analysis of sludge characteristics showed that ultrasonic, chitosan, and sludge-based biochar exhibited synergistic effects, altering the structure and properties of sludge and improving its dewatering efficiency.

Perturbation of clopyralid on bio-denitrification and nitrite accumulation: Long-term performance and biological mechanism

Suyun Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential threat of the herbicide clopyralid (CLP) to ecological systems and its impact on the bio-denitrification process. The results show that low concentrations of CLP cause nitrite accumulation initially, while higher concentrations have no further effect after long-term exposure. Mechanistically, CLP reduces nitrite reductase activity and inhibits metabolic activity through oxidative stress and membrane damage, resulting in nitrite accumulation. However, after prolonged acclimation, nitrite accumulation is significantly reduced, possibly due to increased secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that protect microbial cells and improve nitrite reductase activity and metabolic activities. The study also highlights the changes in microbial community biodiversity and richness, with certain microbial species playing a role in protecting against toxic substances and regulating interactions among microorganisms.
