This paper provides an updated review of the effects of electrode design and the modulation of the catalytic environment on the anode of DBFCs. Breakthroughs in catalytic activity and mitigation of side reactions are critical for solving the current challenges in borohydride oxidation catalysis.
The borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) is the main reaction in the anode of direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs), which is also fundamental to highlight the advantages of DBFCs. However, the catalysis of BOR still faces many challenges. On the one hand, further breakthroughs in catalytic activity are sought to achieve high performance of the anode; on the other hand, the negative effects brought by the side reactions, including the bubble effect, loss of fuel utilization, poisoning of the catalyst, etc., are urgently needed to be mitigated. Essentially, the running of the anode is the catalysis of BOR, so the catalytic viewpoint is critical to solving the above problem. In this work, an updated review of the effects of electrode design and the modulation of the catalytic environment on the anode is provided. Specifically, the electrode design is reviewed mainly from the
