Obtaining tetragonal FeAs layer and superconducting KxFe2As2 by molecular beam epitaxy

Cui Ding et al.

Summary: Characterizing the atomic properties of tetragonal FeAs layer and engineered FeAs superlattices is important for understanding the multi-band superconductivity in iron-pnictides. In this study, we successfully fabricate the tetragonal FeAs layer and KxFe2As2 using topotactic reaction and molecular beam epitaxy. The in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy investigations reveal a root 2 x root 2 reconstruction of the FeAs layer and stripe pattern of KxFe2As2, accompanied by the development of a superconducting-like gap. Ex-situ transport measurement with FeTe capping layers shows a superconducting transition with an onset temperature of 10 K.

Interfacial engineering of ferromagnetism in wafer-scale van derWaals Fe4GeTe2 far above room temperature

Hangtian Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a large-scale iron-based vdW material Fe4GeTe2 with a high Curie temperature (Tc) of around 530 K was developed and its high-temperature ferromagnetism was confirmed by multiple characterizations. Theoretical calculations indicated that the interface-induced right shift of unpaired Fe d electrons' localized states is responsible for the enhanced Tc, which was confirmed by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, by precisely tailoring Fe concentration, arbitrary control of magnetic anisotropy between out-of-plane and in-plane was achieved without inducing any phase disorders. This finding highlights the high potential of Fe4GeTe2 in spintronics, potentially enabling the room-temperature application of all-vdW spintronic devices.

Synthesis and Characterization of [Fe3(As3)3(As4)]3-, a Binary Fe/As Zintl Cluster With an Fe3 Core

Wei-Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we synthesized and characterized the first binary iron arsenide cluster anion, [Fe-3(As-3)(3)(As-4)](3-), which is present in both [K([2.2.2]crypt)](3)[Fe-3(As-3)(3)(As-4)] (1) and [K(18-crown-6)](3)[Fe-3(As-3)(3)(As-4)]center dot en (2). The cluster consists of an Fe-3 triangle with three short Fe-Fe bond lengths, and it is bridged by a 2-butene-like As-4 unit. DFT analysis of the electronic structure reveals a triplet ground state with direct Fe-Fe bonds stabilizing the Fe-3 core.

Strain-controllable high Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy energy in two-dimensional Fe2Si and Fe2Ge

Tianxing Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of strain on the magnetic anisotropy (MA) and Curie temperature (Tc) of monolayer Fe2Si and Fe2Ge with out-of-plane MA was studied using first-principles calculations. It was observed that the out-of-plane MA was enhanced with increasing tensile strain. The applied compressive strain further stabilized the ferromagnetic state with partially weakened out-of-plane MA. Monte Carlo simulations showed an increase in Tc from 600 K to 890 K for monolayer Fe2Si and from 380 K to 700 K for monolayer Fe2Ge under strain ranging from 5% to -5%. Our findings suggest that monolayer Fe2Si and Fe2Ge are promising candidates for high-density data storage applications due to their high MA and Tc.

Dimension-dependent magnetic anisotropy for tunable anomalous Hall effectin transition metal dichalcogenides br

Shilei Ji et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism is achieved in CrTe2 thin films, which have thickness-dependent magnetic properties. The switching of magnetic anisotropy from in-plane to out-of-plane is explained by the hybridization of p orbitals. Monolayer CrTe2 exhibits a broken mirror symmetry in the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and shows an anomalous Hall effect.

Kadowaki-Woods relation and thermal transport in the two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2

Yadong Sun et al.

Summary: We have investigated the electric and thermal transport properties of two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2. The low-temperature longitudinal resistivity in the ab plane is influenced by impurity scattering, quantum correction, and electron-electron interaction. The low-temperature specific heat consists of linear and cubic temperature terms, corresponding to contributions from electrons and phonons. The heavy-fermion state in Fe3GeTe2 can be described by Landau's Fermi liquid theory. The Kadowaki-Woods ratio in Fe3GeTe2 is five times larger and smaller than that of transition metals and heavy-fermion compounds, respectively. Moreover, the thermal conductivity along the c axis increases monotonically with temperature, exhibiting a phonon glass electron crystal behavior due to boundary scattering of phonons. The observed T1.35 dependence of the lattice thermal conductivity at low temperatures arises from the combined effect of highly anisotropic dispersion and strong impurity scattering of phonons.

Summary: This study provides deep insights into the multi-band superconductivity in iron-pnictides by characterizing the tetragonal FeAs layer and engineering FeAs superlattices. The results demonstrate the characteristic reconstruction and superconducting gap formation in the FeAs layer and stripe pattern of KxFe2As2 after potassium intercalation. The ex-situ transport measurement shows a superconducting transition with an onset temperature of 10 K in the samples with FeTe capping layers.

Tunable magnetocrystalline anisotropy of two-dimensional Fe3GeTe2 with adsorbed 5d-transition metal

Miaojia Yuan et al.

Summary: By using first-principles calculations, the influence of W atom adsorption and biaxial strain on the magnetic properties of 2D material Fe3GeTe2 is investigated. It is found that the adsorption mode and strain play a critical role in determining the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) of Fe3GeTe2. Adsorption of W atoms leads to a change in spin reorientation and a colossal MCA. The strain-driven modulation of MCA in different adsorption configurations is also revealed.

Two dimensional Janus Ti-trihalide monolayers with half-metallic characteristics, Mott insulator properties and tunable magnetic anisotropy

Xiaotian Fang et al.

Summary: The electronic and magnetic properties of Janus Ti2X3Y3 (X, Y = I, Br, Cl) monolayers were studied. Two types of orbital splitting were observed, corresponding to semiconducting and half-metallic states. The ground state was found to be a ferromagnetic semiconductor with in-plane magnetic anisotropy. The monolayers showed softness with a low Young's modulus and the band gap could be adjusted by in-plane biaxial strain. The magnetic anisotropy was mainly contributed by the heavy halogen elements.
