Development of an Interactive Software Tool for Designing Solvent Recovery Processes

Jake P. Stengel et al.

Summary: Solvents are widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries, resulting in a significant amount of solvent waste. Traditional disposal methods, such as on-site and off-site disposal, and incineration, have negative environmental impacts. Solvent recovery is not commonly used due to challenges in achieving required purity and the need for additional infrastructure and investments. To address this issue, we have developed a user-friendly software tool that enables engineers to access solvent recovery options and predict an economical and environmentally favorable strategy.

Modifying the Stober Process: Is the Organic Solvent Indispensable?

Jinxin Wang et al.

Summary: The Stober method is an important process for synthesizing inorganic (nano)materials, but it uses a large amount of organic solvent. This study found that the organic solvent can be omitted in the Stober method, and silica particles with the same size can be successfully synthesized without addition of organic solvents. This method has potential applications in the synthesis of other materials.

Redox and emission characteristics of Eu3+ in deep eutectic solvent: Unraveling the hidden potential of DES as luminescent media

Kavitha Jayachandran et al.

Summary: This study explores the electrochemical and photophysical properties of europium nitrate in an acidic deep eutectic solvent. The results show the formation of hydrogen bonding, quasi-reversible reduction of Eu(III) to Eu(II), increasing diffusion coefficient with temperature, and distorted local symmetry of europium ion. Although the internal quantum efficiency of europium ion in the solvent is low, it exhibits multi-wavelength excitability and higher color purity.

Systematic evaluation of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents as alternative media for the extraction of metal ions from aqueous solution

Michael J. Kaul et al.

Summary: The recent development of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (HDESs) has sparked interest in their potential as environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional organic media in various applications, including metal ion separations by liquid-liquid extraction. This study evaluates the facilitated transfer of selected alkali and alkaline earth cations into HDESs from aqueous solution in the presence of a macrocyclic polyether. The results suggest that the distribution of metal ions in HDES-aqueous systems is more similar to that in alcohols rather than ionic liquids.

Mechanistic Approach to Reveal Interaction of Uranyl Ions in Alkyltriphenylphosphonium Bromide-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent

Sushil M. Patil et al.

Summary: This study synthesized three new deep eutectic solvents (DES) and explored the behavior of metals in them. The researchers found that the absorption maxima of uranyl in DES was red-shifted, indicating a strong interaction between DES and uranyl. Through electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques, the solvation and speciation of UO22+ ions in DES were revealed, along with the unusual trends observed in the physical properties of DES.
