Spray optimization to enhance the cooling performance of transparent roofs in hot-humid areas

Junsong Wang et al.

Summary: By testing different spray nozzle types, this study determines that mist-spray is more effective in cooling and shading transparent roofs compared to water-spray. In field experiments, the mist-spray system successfully mitigated indoor overheating and eliminated thermal stratification among different floors, resulting in significant energy savings and a shorter recovery period for infrastructure investment. This study is significant for promoting the scientific application of mist-spray technique to improve building thermal performance.

Review on stabilization/solidification methods and mechanism of heavy metals based on OPC-based binders

Liyuan Chen et al.

Summary: Stabilization/solidification with OPC-based binders is a suitable method to remediate HM-contaminated soil and reuse industrial waste resources. Alkaline wastes can immobilize HM ions by precipitation, but some ions may redissolve. Low pH wastes can be used to immobilize HM ions or adjust the pH in soil products.

Process compatible desulfurization of NSP cement production: A novel strategy for efficient capture of trace SO2 and the industrial trial

Tongsheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The SO2 capture potentials of CaCO3, CaO, and Ca(OH)2 in the preheater environment were maximized by introducing V2O5-based catalyst and selecting optimal reaction temperature. The de-SO2 efficiency of calcium-based adsorbents increased significantly in the presence of V2O5-based catalyst. A novel process compatible FGD technology was designed to reduce SO2 emission of cement industry at low economic cost.

The influence of calcium nitrate/sodium nitrate on the hydration process of cement paste mixed with alkali free liquid accelerator

Yongdong Xu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of calcium nitrate and sodium nitrate on the setting time and mortar strength of cement paste mixed with an alkali-free liquid accelerator. The results show that the addition of calcium nitrate and sodium nitrate can significantly shorten the setting time and improve the early strength of the cement paste.

Solidification/stabilization of soil heavy metals by alkaline industrial wastes: A critical review

Qi Jiang et al.

Summary: Alkaline industrial wastes can be used for the solidification/stabilization of heavy metal contaminated soils, replacing traditional stabilizers. Soda residues, steel slag, and carbide slag are suitable for stabilizing Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cu, while red mud is a potential passivation agent for stabilizing As.

Mechanisms and adsorption capacities of biochar for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from industrial wastewater

T. G. Ambaye et al.

Summary: The rapid growth of urbanization and industrialization in developing countries has led to a significant increase in industrial wastewater production, posing high environmental risks if not properly treated. The application of biochar in removing organic and inorganic pollutants from industrial effluents has attracted attention. Future research should focus on optimizing biochar production and regeneration methods to enhance adsorption capacity and economic benefits.

Cement-stabilized contaminated soil: Understanding Pb retention with XANES and Raman spectroscopy

Silvia Contessi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fate of lead in contaminated soil treated with cement and proposed that the main mechanism involved in lead retention is its incorporation and/or adsorption on calcium silicate hydrates and ettringite. The research used synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy to probe the transformation of lead environment in the real contaminated soil after stabilization, providing valuable insights into the stabilization mechanisms.

Three types of passivators on the stabilization of exogenous lead-contaminated soil with different particle sizes

Shuai Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that the single application of P5 and combined application of LP5 had the best immobilization effect on exogenous Pb in soil, significantly reducing the content of DTPA-Pb and available Pb. The application of LP5 in the original soil led to a significant decrease in TCLP-Pb and available Pb content. Total Pb was mainly enriched in coarse sand and clay, while the application of GL5 significantly affected the content of weak acid extractable and reducible Pb in fine sand, silty sand, and clay.

Evaluation of pervious concrete performance with pulverized biochar as cement replacement

Yinghong Qin et al.

Summary: The study found that replacing a portion of cement with biochar in pervious concrete has little impact on porosity and water permeability, but increases water absorption. When the biochar content is 0-6.5%, the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of pervious concrete are higher than conventional concrete, but compromised above 6.5%.
