Turbulence structure and bank erosion process in a dredged channel

Sukhjeet Arora et al.

Summary: Riverbank erosion has significant impacts on both geomorphology and human activities, including changes in channel form and the threat to floodplain human habitation, agricultural land, and stability of hydraulic structures and pipelines. With the increase in channel dredging, the erosion response of riverbanks to mining has gained importance in river basin management.

Hydro-morphological behavior around T-shaped spur dikes with downward seepage

Harish Kumar Patel et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the flow behavior near a T-shaped spur dike field under different seepage conditions (no seepage, 5% downward seepage, and 10% downward seepage). The experiments aim to analyze the channel morphology for different discharge rates. The results show that downward seepage significantly modifies the bed elevation and scour depth, with the maximum scour depth observed at the edge of the first spur dike facing the flow. The rate of scouring increases with higher seepage percentages, and the flow distribution is shifted near the channel bed due to downward seepage.

Experimental assessment and prediction of temporal scour depth around a spur dike

Manish Pandey et al.

Summary: This study focused on experimentally assessing the temporal variation of scour depth around a vertical wall spur dike and identifying the parameters influencing spur dike performance for sand-gravel mixtures. The researchers conducted physical experiments in a flume to derive a new predictive model for spur dike scour, which performed well when compared to other existing models. The study found that the temporal scour depth variation in sediment mixtures is affected by various factors, and proposed a new mathematical model for estimating scour depths in sand-gravel sediment mixtures.

Flow behaviour around spur dyke founded in cohesive sediment mixtures

Ajay Singh Lodhi et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of flow and turbulence characteristics measured by a down-looking 16 MHz micro acoustic Doppler velocimeter around a partially submerged spur dyke. The analysis showed larger turbulence intensities and Reynolds stresses within the scour hole in the wake zone of the dyke. Different types of bursting events and quadrant analysis of the velocimeter data were also conducted around the dyke.

Mean flow and turbulence characteristics around single-arm instream structures

Seokkoo Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigated flow patterns around three commonly used instream rock structures in an open-channel flume using high-resolution large-eddy simulations and acoustic Doppler velocimetry measurements. Comparison of measurements with simulation results revealed important flow features such as 3D flow structure, secondary flow patterns, vulnerability to scour, and energy dissipation mechanisms for different cases. The newly discovered flow features provided valuable insights into understanding the flow mechanisms associated with instream structures.

Summary: This study investigates the local scour process around a T-shaped spur dike placed at different locations along the outer bank of a reverse-meandering channel. It was found that the Froude number of approach flow and spur dike location have significant impacts on the depth of local scour.

Turbulent flow characteristics around a non-submerged rectangular obstacle on the side of an open channel

SeokKoo Kang et al.

Summary: Numerical simulation was used to explore the three-dimensional flow structure and turbulence characteristics around a non-submerged rectangular obstacle in an open channel, with a focus on a low length-to-depth ratio condition. High-resolution large-eddy simulation (LES) was employed on a parallel supercomputer to resolve all important details of the flow, and the results were compared with measurements to examine various flow features such as horseshoe vortex structure, free-surface vortex structure, recirculation zones, and wall shear stress distribution. Key insights into the complete three-dimensional flow structure and wall shear stress patterns around the obstacle were provided.

Flow Dynamics Around Permeable Spur Dike in a Rectangular Channel

Sohail Iqbal et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in the permeability of the spur dikes has a reciprocal effect on the mean stream-wise velocity and the recirculation regions created within the impermeable spur dike field decreased with increased permeability. Permeable spur dikes showed a significant decrease in turbulent intensities and turbulent kinetic energy compared to impermeable spur dikes.
