Phase behavior and molecular insights on the separation of dimethyl carbonate and methanol azeotrope by extractive distillation using deep eutectic solvents

Jianguang Qi et al.

Summary: This study prepared deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on choline chloride (ChCl) and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and urea, glycerol (G), malonic acid (MA), and levulinic acid (LA) as hydrogen bond donors (HBDs). The experimental and quantum chemical (QC) results showed that DESs have a significant effect on the intermolecular forces and can effectively separate the binary azeotropes of methanol (MeOH) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC).

Understanding the fundamental interaction mechanism of hazardous gases and imidazolium based ionic liquids for efficient gas adsorption

Paridhi Sanchora et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption mechanism of hazardous gases on ionic liquids with different cations and anions using density functional theory. It is found that ILs with C(2)mim Cl and C(2)mim Br cations have higher adsorption energy values for various gases. Vibrational bands and electronic structure calculations confirm the strong interactions between gases and cations in the ILs.

Phase behavior and extraction mechanism of methanol-n-hexane separation using choline-based deep eutectic solvent

Xingyi Liu et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have attracted increasing attention as green solvents for azeotropic separation due to their low vapor pressure, nontoxicity, and low cost. In this study, three choline-based DESs were used to separate methanol-n-hexane azeotrope, and their extraction efficiencies were compared. The extraction mechanism of methanol by DESs was studied using molecular dynamics (MD) method, and the experimental and simulation results were in good agreement. Among the three DESs, ChCl/EG(1:2) showed the highest extraction efficiency for methanol. The role of Cl- in the liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) was found to be crucial, primarily provided by the electrostatic force.

Capturing VOCs in the pharmaceutical industry with ionic liquids

Chengmin Gui et al.

Summary: In this study, [EMIM][Ac] was used to absorb two common pharmaceutical VOCs, DCM and ethanol. The results showed removal ratios of 91.82% and 97.01% for DCM and ethanol, respectively. The mechanisms of absorption were studied using the COSMO-RS model and quantum chemical calculation, and industrial-scale VOC capture processes were established.
