Characterization of the Fecal and Mucosa-Associated Microbiota in Dogs with Chronic Inflammatory Enteropathy

David Diaz-Reganon et al.

Summary: Chronic inflammatory enteropathies are a common cause of chronic vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. This study aimed to characterize the intestinal bacterial microbiota in dogs with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using duodenal biopsies and fecal samples, and compare them to healthy dogs. The results showed significant differences in the gut microbiota of dogs with IBD compared to healthy dogs, with more pronounced changes in the fecal microbiota. Further investigations are needed to understand the functionality of the gut microbiome in canine IBD.

Avenanthramide Improves Colonic Damage Induced by Food Allergies in Mice through Altering Gut Microbiota and Regulating Hsp70-NF-κB Signaling

Pan Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of Avenanthramide (AVA) on colonic damage induced by food allergy and its mechanism. AVA alleviated colonic inflammation and improved intestinal barrier damage by inhibiting NF-KB phosphorylation and enhancing heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) expression. AVA also modulated microbial composition and increased the production of butyrate. However, the effects of AVA were eliminated by an Hsp70 inhibitor.

Gut microbiota-derived bile acids in intestinal immunity, inflammation, and tumorigenesis

Jie Cai et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC) are diverse intestinal diseases threatening an increasing number of individuals as their lifestyles become westernized. Recent research has found that gut microbiota-derived metabolites play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis and modulating the progression of intestinal diseases.

Structural insights into the HBV receptor and bile acid transporter NTCP

Jae-Hyun Park et al.

Summary: Around 250 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV), and 15 million of them may also carry hepatitis D virus (HDV), which increases the risk of severe liver disease. The structure of the HBV receptor NTCP has not been solved, but using cryo-electron microscopy, the structure of NTCP bound to an antibody has been determined. Comparison with other related proteins reveals a common mechanism of bile acid transport, and the NTCP structure presents a new pocket for potential drug design.

The Mechanism of Important Components in Canine Fecal Microbiota Transplantation

Kerong Li et al.

Summary: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a potential alternative treatment to antibiotics, and its effective components include commensal bacteria, viruses, fungi, bacterial metabolites, and immunoglobulin A (IgA). These components help restore the recipient's microbial community, improve intestinal barrier, and induce anti-inflammation by affecting microbiota and regulating host immunity.

Roles of the Polyphenol-Gut Microbiota Interaction in Alleviating Colitis and Preventing Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer

Yiying Zhao et al.

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that polyphenols can promote beneficial gut bacteria growth, alleviate colonic diseases such as colitis and colorectal cancer, and alter the composition and function of the gut microbiota. Polyphenols increase levels of butyrate producers and probiotics, while decreasing opportunistic pathogenic or proinflammatory microbes in the gut, thereby protecting against inflammation and cancer. Polyphenol metabolites produced by the gut microbiota have anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities, contributing to the protective effects of polyphenols on colitis and colorectal cancer.

Gut microbiome is associated with the clinical response to anti-PD-1 based immunotherapy in hepatobiliary cancers

Jinzhu Mao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between gut microbiome and clinical response to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy in patients with advanced hepatobiliary cancers. Taxonomic signatures enriched in responders were effective biomarkers to predict the clinical response and survival benefit of immunotherapy. Functional annotation indicated that taxa associated with different metabolic pathways may modulate the clinical response to immunotherapy in hepatobiliary cancers.

Dichotomous roles of neutrophils in modulating pathogenic and repair processes of inflammatory bowel diseases

Huimin Chen et al.

Summary: Neutrophils are complex innate immune cells that play a critical role in maintaining intestinal mucosal homeostasis. While they have beneficial effects in defending against microbial invasion and promoting tissue repair, their hyperactivation or dysfunction can lead to abnormal immune responses, resulting in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The potential roles of neutrophils in modulating the pathogenic and repair processes of inflammatory bowel diseases are not fully understood, as they can both exacerbate intestinal damage and aid in tissue restoration.

Gut Microbiota Composition Affects Procyanidin A2-Attenuated Atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- Mice by Modulating the Bioavailability of Its Microbial Metabolites

Shiying Yang et al.

Summary: PCA2 administration was found to attenuate HFD-induced AS in ApoE(-/-) mice by improving gut microbiota imbalance and regulating pathological abnormalities, lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation. However, antibiotic intervention offset the benefits of PCA2 and prevented gut microbiota-mediated biotransformation, resulting in a significant decrease in microbial metabolites. The study highlights the significant influence of gut microbiota on the bioavailability of microbial metabolites and the potential of PCA2 in preventing AS.

Summary: The study demonstrates that grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) has positive effects on weight reduction, insulin resistance improvement, promotion of adiponectin and leptin levels, as well as activation of thermogenic metabolism in BAT and WAT. Furthermore, GSPE can also improve the gut microbiota structure in HFD-fed mice.
