Preparation of high-value porous carbon by microwave treatment of chili straw pyrolysis residue

Xikui Zhang et al.

Summary: Microwave technology was used to prepare porous carbon from chili straw pyrolysis residue. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature led to higher thermal stability of the biochar. The carbon speciation of the porous carbon PC500 was similar to graphite, with an inorganic carbon content of 51.21%. Additionally, the specific surface area of the activated porous carbon increased with higher pyrolysis temperature, reaching a maximum value of 2768.52 m2/g for PC500. When tested for electrochemical properties, PC500 exhibited a high specific capacitance of 352F/g at 1 A/g, compared to only 226.1F/g for conventional heating. The microwave-prepared porous carbon showed better electrical properties and the biochar obtained at higher pyrolysis temperature had a more enriched pore structure after activation.
