Transparent LiOH-doped magnesium aluminate spinel produced by spark plasma sintering: Effects of heating rate and dopant concentration

Vaclav Pouchly et al.

Summary: The effects of LiOH doping and different SPS schedules on densification behavior and final transparency of polycrystalline magnesium aluminate spinel were investigated. Slow heating rate was optimal for undoped spinel with the highest transmittance, while fast heating rate was beneficial for LiOH-doped spinel with reduced carbon contamination.

Effect of Y2O3 content on densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of reaction sintered magnesium aluminate spinel

Biswajit Baruah et al.

Summary: Dense magnesium aluminate spinels with favorable densification and improved mechanical properties can be developed by adding 2 wt% Y2O3 through a solid-state reaction sintering method. The addition of Y2O3 promotes densification of the spinels due to the similar crystal structure with yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG). Microstructural investigation shows that Y2O3-containing spinel batches have a controlled grain structure. The Y2O3-doped spinel batches sintered at 1650°C exhibit better mechanical properties than the undoped spinels.

Simultaneous precipitation of Zr4+and Y3+ions induced refinement of precursors and powders in fabrication of Zr4+doped Y2O3 transparent ceramics

Yifei Cao et al.

Summary: Zr4+ ion doping effectively enhances the optical and mechanical qualities of Y2O3 transparent ceramics. The simultaneous precipitation of Zr4+ and Y3+ ions leads to the refinement of precursors and Y2O3 powders. The acting mechanisms of Zr additive involve refining precursor, producing oxygen interstitial, and promoting solute-drag, resulting in high transmittance Y2O3 ceramics.

Gelling behavior of MgAl2O4 slurries with a common dispersant

Mengwei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, transparent MgAl2O4 ceramics were successfully shaped by using polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a dispersant and gelling agent. Spinel slurries were prepared using ball-milling method, and the gelling occurred at room temperature without any other organic additive. A novel in situ characterization method was also developed to investigate the strengthening process of wet green body and guide the demolding.

Mechanical and optical properties of MgAl2O4 ceramics and ballistic efficiency of spinel based armour

Caroline Gajdowski et al.

Summary: This study focuses on understanding the relationship between the properties of MgAl2O4 ceramics and their ballistic performances. By adjusting the processing parameters, ceramics with different microstructures were obtained. One of the ceramics, a transparent MgAl2O4 spinel, demonstrated good mechanical properties and a reduced thickness and density compared to a regular glass armor when being tested against an armor piercing projectile.

Ke Shan et al.

Summary: The study showed that the appropriate addition of Yb2O3 can improve the densification and corrosion resistance of MgAl2O4 spinel, while also generating a second phase, Al5Yb3O12. With 2wt% Yb2O3 added, the samples exhibited the highest hardness, smallest corrosion depth, and smaller grain size.
