Considering the flanking region variants of nonbinary SNP and phenotype-informative SNP to constitute 30 microhaplotype loci for increasing the discriminative ability of forensic applications

Dan Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, 30 microhaplotype loci based on nonbinary SNPs and piSNPs were selected and showed good polymorphism, suitable for personal identification and kinship testing, with the ability to differentiate populations worldwide. These microhaplotype loci demonstrated similar capabilities to 15 STR loci in kinship testing and had stronger ability to exclude nonbiological parents.

The population genetics characteristics of a 90 locus panel of microhaplotypes

Andrew J. Pakstis et al.

Summary: The study analyzed information for 90 microhaplotype loci in 4009 individuals from 79 world populations, showing the MH panel's excellent characteristics for various forensic applications and effective differentiation of population groupings and subgroups. The research detected 65 novel SNPs in 39 MHs using mMHseq, highlighting the potential of this technology for forensic case work analysis and tailored MH analysis for specific geographical regions.

Identification and sequencing of 59 highly polymorphic microhaplotypes for analysis of DNA mixtures

Riga Wu et al.

Summary: The study identified 59 new highly polymorphic microhaplotypes with an average effective number of alleles of 5.44. These microhaplotypes showed high genetic variations and performed well in forensic DNA mixture analysis, providing new choices for highly discriminatory markers. The results demonstrated the suitability and effectiveness of microhaplotypes in mixture analysis.

Forensic Application Evaluation of a Novel Canine STR System in Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Shiba Inu Groups

Yating Fang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the forensic application values of 19 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci in Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Shiba Inus. Both canine groups adhered to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, with no linkage disequilibrium among the 19 STR loci. All loci were found to be polymorphic, with locus C38 showing the highest polymorphism. Furthermore, a closer genetic relationship was observed between Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Labradors.

Developments in forensic DNA analysis

Penelope R. Haddrill

Summary: This article reviews recent advances in forensic genetics, including the use of massively parallel sequencing for STR and other marker analysis, advancements in DNA mixture interpretation through probabilistic genotyping methods, profiling of different RNA types for body fluid identification, SNP marker interrogation for predicting phenotypes, epigenetics and DNA methylation analysis for tissue typing and age estimation, and the emerging field of forensic genetic genealogy. Researchers face the key challenge of carefully considering how to implement these innovations into forensic practice to maximize their potential benefits.
