An analysis of the carbonization process of coal-based activated carbon at different heating rates

Lichao Ge et al.

Summary: The production of coal-based activated carbon involves carbonization and activation processes, but there is little research on the carbonization process, and the understanding of it is unclear. This study investigated the product distribution and release characteristics of the carbonization process of coal-based activated carbon at different heating rates. The results showed that the gas products mainly consisted of H2, CH4, CO, CO2, CnHm, and H2S. GC-MS analysis revealed that phenols and dehydrated sugars had the highest content in the tar. The research results provide theoretical guidance and a practical basis for the development of coal-based activated carbon production, reactor design, pollutant removal, and high-value utilization of coal resources.
