Real-Time Identification of Cyanobacteria Blooms in Lakeshore Zone Using Camera and Semantic Segmentation: A Case Study of Lake Chaohu (Eastern China)

Zhiyong Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a real-time and dynamic monitoring technology for cyanobacteria blooms in surface water using a shore-based camera monitoring network. The results demonstrated that the time requirement of monitoring cyanobacteria blooms in real time on an hourly basis could be met by utilizing technology that uses multiple threads. DeeplabV3+(ResNet-50) was found to be the most suitable semantic segmentation model for accurately identifying and evaluating cyanobacteria blooms.

Global divergent trends of algal blooms detected by satellite during 1982-2018

Chong Fang et al.

Summary: Algal blooms in inland lakes have shown divergent trends over the past 37 years, with increasing and decreasing frequencies and extents observed in different regions. North America experienced an intensification of algal blooms before 1999, followed by a decrease in severity after the 2000s. Asia had the strongest intensification of algal blooms, followed by South America, Africa, and Europe. Anthropogenic factors had slightly stronger contributions to algal bloom intensification compared to climatic drivers.

Global mapping reveals increase in lacustrine algal blooms over the past decade

Xuejiao Hou et al.

Summary: Algal blooms, an emerging threat to global inland water quality, are occurring more frequently, especially in developing countries in Asia and Africa where agricultural fertilizer is heavily used. The establishment of a global bloom database is crucial for future risk assessments and mitigation efforts.

Accurate Monitoring of Algal Blooms in Key Nearshore Zones of Lakes and Reservoirs Using Binocular Video Surveillance System

Jia Liu et al.

Summary: In recent years, frequent algal blooms in nearshore zones of eutrophic lakes and reservoirs have posed a serious threat to regional water supply security. This paper proposes a binocular video surveillance system for accurate monitoring and extraction of algal blooms, by intelligently distinguishing water and non-water regions and eliminating interference from onshore vegetation.

Thirty-Four-Year Record (1987-2021) of the Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Algal Blooms in Lake Dianchi from Multi-Source Remote Sensing Insights

Jinge Ma et al.

Summary: Lake Dianchi is one of the most eutrophic lakes in China, and the occurrence of algal blooms poses a significant threat to the water ecosystem. This study reconstructed a unified time series of bloom areas in Lake Dianchi using Landsat and MODIS images combined with the Floating Algae Index (FAI), and analyzed the dynamics, seasonal characteristics, and spatial distribution of algal blooms. The study also analyzed the relationship between environmental factors and algal blooms, highlighting the importance of rainy season images in reconstructing time series based on different sensors.

Predicting algal blooms: Are we overlooking groundwater?

Andrea E. Brookfield et al.

Summary: Advances in understanding and predicting freshwater algal bloom dynamics have highlighted the significant role of groundwater inputs in modulating algal growth, depending on unique local conditions. The distinct chemistry of groundwater can either support or prevent algal blooms, with key mechanisms including the redox state of the subsurface and stability of groundwater discharge. More research is needed to improve predictions of algal blooms by considering changes in land use, water management, and climate impacting groundwater dynamics.
