Experimental evaluation of gamma-rays shielding properties of ceramic materials used in dentistry

Aycan Sengul et al.

Summary: In this study, the radiation shielding properties of certain ceramic materials were experimentally measured and compared with simulation results. Gamma rays with energies of 662, 1173, and 1332 keV were used, generated from 137Cs and 60Co radioactive sources. The experimental measurements were conducted using a gamma spectrometer with a 3'' x 3'' NaI(Tl) detector, while the simulations employed the Monte Carlo method and Gamos 6.2 software to evaluate the linear attenuation coefficients of ceramic materials.

Optimization of 3x3 inch NaI(Tl) detector related to energy, distance and bias voltage

Muhammed Fatih Kuluozturk

Summary: There are different types of radiation detectors and working principles used in radiation detection. NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors are widely used in nuclear spectroscopic studies, but calibration and optimization are necessary. Factors such as experimental setup and bias voltage significantly affect the detector's response function. Through experimentation and computational studies, the most suitable operating conditions can be determined.

Physical, structural, and mechanical properties of the concrete by FLUKA code and phy-X/PSD software

Iskender Akkurt et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the radiation shielding, physical, structural, and mechanical qualities of different types of marble concrete using FLUKA code, Phy-X/PSD software, and analytical method. The results show that MC25%, the thinnest type, is needed to reduce the initial intensity to half, requiring less volume of shielding material. MC10% exhibits the highest Energy Absorption Buildup Factor (EABF) and Exposure Buildup Factor (EBF) at 40 mfp. Moreover, the Transmission Factor (TF) of the marble concrete samples reveals a decrease in efficiency as energy increases. The Makishima-Mackenzie Model (MMM) is used to evaluate the structural and mechanical properties of the selected shielding materials, showing a decrease in elastic moduli from MC0% to MC25%, with the highest values of mechanical moduli requiring the highest values of bond dissociation energy (Gt).

Summary: In this study, linear attenuation coefficients of concretes containing different rates of basalt-magnetite aggregates were measured for gamma energies emitted from radioactive sources. The results showed a linear relationship between the linear attenuation coefficients and the basalt-magnetite ratio. The experimental and theoretical results were found to be compatible, indicating the importance of basalt-magnetite as an aggregate in developing concrete with radiation shielding properties.
