Spatiotemporal segregation of chiral supramolecular polymers

Shovan Kumar Sen et al.

Summary: Programmable control over the formation of functional supramolecular polymers, which leads to different morphological forms in solution, is a long-standing issue in chemistry. In this study, we report the spatiotemporal segregation of redox-responsive supramolecular assemblies inside spatiotemporal domains generated within the same solution under out-of-equilibrium conditions by using audible sound. This strategy allows for the spatiotemporal control of the formation of at least two types of assemblies with different chiralities and morphologies.

Multistep, site-selective noncovalent synthesis of two-dimensional block supramolecular polymers

Norihiko Sasaki et al.

Summary: Although the principles of noncovalent bonding are well understood, supramolecular noncovalent synthesis still cannot match the precision and complexity of organic and/or macromolecular covalent synthesis. In this study, we demonstrate the stepwise synthesis of block supramolecular polymers with precise control over their compositions and sequences using fluorinated alkyl chains on metal-porphyrin derivatives. This site selectivity enables the formation of toroidal structures through one-dimensional supramolecular polymerization and cyclization, followed by the formation of two-dimensional assemblies with concentric toroidal morphologies through secondary nucleation, elongation, and cyclization steps.

Photochemical Surgery of 1D Metal-Organic Frameworks with a Site-Selective Solubilization/Crystallization Strategy

Kunyi Leng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a photochemical surgery method that combines top-down and bottom-up approaches to enable site-selective solubilization and crystallization of 1D MOFs. By using photoreactive MOFs and controlling the light conditions and material components, the precision synthesis of 1D multiblock MOFs with desired block lengths and sequences is achieved.

Toward the Design and Construction of Supramolecular Functional Molecular Materials Based on Metal-Metal Interactions

Michael Ho-Yeung Chan et al.

Summary: Supramolecular functional materials, stabilized by self-assembled molecules through supramolecular chemistry, have been a promising field. Metal-metal interactions, a type of unconventional noncovalent interaction, have been utilized to construct self-assembled metal-based materials with rich spectroscopic functionalities. However, the systematic control of hierarchical architectures through metal-metal interactions remains challenging.

Insights into Chemically Fueled Supramolecular Polymers

Anastasiia Sharko et al.

Summary: Supramolecular polymerization can be controlled in space and time by chemical fuels. The activation and deactivation of a nonassembled monomer leads to self-assembly into a polymer and subsequent disassembly. This approach, which has been mastered by biology, has recently been achieved in fully artificial systems. Mathematical models have been developed to describe the activation, deactivation, assembly, and disassembly kinetics in different regimes of chemically fueled cooperative supramolecular polymerization, with the possibility of sustained oscillations. These models encourage further quantification in future studies.
