Half-quantized Hall effect at the parity-invariant Fermi surface

Jin-Yu Zou et al.

Summary: Here, we report the discovery of a single gapless Dirac cone of half-quantized Hall conductance in a magnetically doped topological insulator heterostructure. It is found that the Hall conductance is half-quantized when the parity symmetry is preserved near the Fermi surface. The gapless Dirac point is protected by local parity symmetry and the topologically nontrivial band structure of the topological insulator. The recent experiment confirms the existence of the gapless Dirac cone and the parity invariance of the Fermi surface, leading to the observation of half Hall conductance [M. Mogi et al., Nat. Phys. 18, 390 (2022)]. These findings suggest a condensed matter realization of a topological phase with a one-half topological invariant.

Experimental signature of the parity anomaly in a semi-magnetic topological insulator

M. Mogi et al.

Summary: In this study, the half-integer quantization of Hall conductance was observed in a synthetic heterostructure called a semi-magnetic topological insulator. The results provide evidence of the condensed matter realization of the parity anomaly and offer a new way to study the physics enabled by a single Dirac fermion.

Half-quantized Hall effect and power law decay of edge-current distribution

Jin-Yu Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the topological and transport properties of a class of parity anomalous semimetals and uncover the distinct bulk-edge correspondence. We find that the half-quantized Hall effect is realized via the bulk massless Dirac fermions while the nontrivial Berry curvature is provided by the massive Dirac fermions. The spatial distribution of the edge current in these materials decays according to a power law instead of an exponential law in the integer quantum Hall effect. We also discuss the physical relevance of parity anomalous semimetals to three-dimensional semimagnetic topological insulators and two-dimensional photonic crystals.

Reentrant Localization Transition in a Quasiperiodic Chain

Shilpi Roy et al.

Summary: Systems with quasiperiodic disorder exhibit a localization transition in low dimensions. In a one-dimensional dimerized lattice with staggered quasiperiodic disorder, some localized eigenstates become extended for a range of intermediate disorder strengths after the localization transition. Eventually, the system undergoes a second localization transition at a higher disorder strength, leading to all states being localized.

Half-Magnetic Topological Insulator with Magnetization-Induced Dirac Gap at a Selected Surface

Ruie Lu et al.

Summary: The discovery of the stoichiometric ferromagnet MnBi8Te13 as an unprecedented half-magnetic topological insulator with surface magnetization existing only on one side reveals a unique material system with tunable Dirac gap and potential for realizing surface anomalous Hall effect. This represents a significant step towards understanding magnetization-induced topological properties and axion electrodynamics in condensed matter systems.

Topology of an anti-parity-time symmetric non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

H. C. Wu et al.

Summary: The study introduces an anti-parity-time (anti-PT) symmetric non-Hermitian SSH model, where large non-Hermiticity plays a key role in affecting the topological phases, and gaining and losses are alternatively arranged under the anti-PT symmetry to expand the topological phase. The appearance of degenerate points at the center of the Brillouin zone determines the topological phase transition, while exceptional points do not affect the band topology.

Experimental signatures of the chiral anomaly in Dirac-Weyl semimetals

N. P. Ong et al.

Summary: The chiral anomaly, originally studied in pion decay, has led to related effects in Dirac and Weyl semimetals, describing the conversion of left-moving fermions to right-moving ones in electric and magnetic fields. Recent experiments have explored this anomaly, particularly focusing on negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and potential current-jetting artifacts in Dirac-Weyl semimetals. The research extends to various experiments like non-local transport, thermopower, thermal conductivity, and optical pump-probe response, with future prospects involving improved LMR experiments and new investigations in thermal conductivity and optics.
