Size effect on flexural strength of notched and un-notched concrete and rock specimens by Finite Fracture Mechanics

Mattia Baldassari et al.

Summary: In this paper, Finite Fracture Mechanics is applied to investigate the size effect on the flexural strength of notched and un-notched quasi-brittle material specimens. The Three Point Bending and Semi-Circular Bending test geometries are given special attention. The scaling of flexural strength is of particular interest for concrete and concrete-like materials due to the large variation in size.

A new method for determining the tension-softening curve of concrete

Xiao-Yan Han et al.

Summary: The tension-softening constitutive model plays a key role in analyzing crack propagation in concrete structures. This paper conducts a fracture test on three-point bending concrete specimens and establishes a relationship between cohesive stress and crack opening displacement based on the equality between external work and energy consumed by crack propagation. A simplified bilinear tension-softening constitutive model is proposed for practical applications, and its validity is verified through numerical simulations. Therefore, the new method presented in this study is valuable for analyzing the nonlinear fracture characteristics of concrete.

Effect of attenuation on amplitude distribution and b value in rock acoustic emission tests

Daolong Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of attenuation on the estimate of b value and finds that data truncation is the primary cause of modification of the frequency-amplitude distribution in the presence of attenuation. The research also determines the minimum data volume required for accurate estimation of the underlying b value from the apparent amplitude distribution.

Experimental research on the mechanical and acoustic emission properties of sandstone tensile failure

Hong Lv et al.

Summary: Bedding planes have significant influences on the mechanical properties of layered rocks. The increase in dip angle of bedding planes affects the strength and failure mode of layered sandstone. The acoustic emission (AE) characteristics show consistency in different failure modes. Multi-block cyclic loading increases the failure strength and damage ratio of rocks with bedding planes.

Investigation on model-I fracture toughness of sandstone with the structure of typical bedding inclination angles subjected to three-point bending

Yu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study accurately determined the crack initiation toughness using classical equivalent elastic fracture theories and inversely computed the cohesive fracture toughness through the double-K fracture criterion (DKFC) and the double-G fracture criterion (DGFC). Experimental results showed significant weakening trends in strength and deformation parameters with changing bedding direction. Moreover, there were little differences in crack initiation toughness among different calculation methods. The applicability of DKFC and DGFC was validated using acoustic emission (AE) technique. This study provides important fracture mechanics parameters for underground engineering and tunnel engineering.

Crack propagation characteristics and fracture toughness analysis of rock-based layered material with pre-existing crack under semi-circular bending

Tengfei Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fracture initiation and propagation in rock-based layered materials, focusing on the interactions with the interlayer interface. A numerical model based on the cohesive zone model (CZM) method is established and validated against experimental tests. The results reveal the influence of factors such as interface strength, crack inclination angle, crack length ratio, and support span ratio on the fracture behavior. The findings are important for assessing the stability of rock-based structures.

Research on the effect of loading rate on the fracture characteristics of granite using cracked straight through Brazilian disc specimens

Qin Xie et al.

Summary: The effect of loading rate on the mode I fracture characteristics of granite was studied using Cracked Straight Through Brazilian Disc (CSTBD) specimen. The results showed that the equivalent fracture toughness had a noticeable dependence on loading rate. The crack tip opening displacement increased initially with loading rate, but then decreased when the loading rate reached a certain value. Additionally, the cumulative energy of AE signals and the loading time could be well described by a power-law function, with the power exponent decreasing with increasing loading rate.

Acoustic emission characteristics and failure mode analysis of rock failure under stress state

Shijie Li et al.

Summary: This study employed AE monitoring technology to analyze the acoustic characteristics and failure mode of yellow sandstone in BITT, UCT, and TCT. The results showed that the decrease in the AE b value corresponds to the sudden increase in AE energy before the peak stress. The distribution of peak frequency varies in different tests. By analyzing the parameters, different cracking modes can be classified. The research results provide some reference for studying the failure process of rocks under complex stress.

Prediction of Mode I Fracture Toughness of Shale Specimens by Different Fracture Theories Considering Size Effect

Qin Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the difference between the maximum tangential stress fracture criterion and the size effect law model in predicting the apparent fracture toughness of shale, through mode I fracture tests on shale specimens with different sizes. The effect of specimen size and geometry on fracture toughness and the selection of fracture criterion on the prediction of inherent fracture toughness were also studied. The results show that fracture toughness increases with specimen size, and the improved maximum tangential stress criterion provides the most accurate prediction of fracture toughness for different sized shale specimens.
