Remediation of Cu and As contaminated water and soil utilizing biochar supported layered double hydroxide: Mechanisms and soil environment altering

Pengling Shao et al.

Summary: In this study, a biochar supported FeMnMg layered double hydroxide composite was prepared and used for the simultaneous remediation of copper and arsenic contamination in water and soil. The results showed that the composite exhibited good adsorption performance for heavy metals and could reduce the availability of heavy metals in soil. Additionally, the addition of the composite enhanced the activity of soil microorganisms, indirectly promoting the passivation and stabilization of heavy metals.

Remediation performance and mechanisms of Cu and Cd contaminated water and soil using Mn/Al-layered double oxide-loaded biochar

Pengcheng Lin et al.

Summary: The combined pollution of heavy metals is a global issue. It has been found that loading Mn/Al-layered double oxide onto crab shells biochar can help remediate the combined pollution of Cd and Cu in soil and water. The research shows that LDO/BC exhibits highly efficient performance in remediating e-waste-contaminated soil and reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals.

Advantages of using peat gel to reduce the toxicity of soils polluted with oil products

A. Olkova

Summary: The study found that treating oil-polluted soil with peat gel can reduce toxicity, and a smaller amount of peat gel is required. After adding peat gel to gasoline-polluted soil, the content of oil products in the soil decreased, and the locomotor activity and bioluminescence of the organisms in the soil were restored.

Methods for selenium removal from contaminated waters: a review

Eric Lichtfouse et al.

Summary: Contamination of waters by metals, metalloids, and organometallic pollutants is a global health issue. The presence of selenium, particularly at high concentrations in water, is a growing concern, especially in developing countries. Selenium is difficult to remove due to its presence in complex mixtures and competition with other anions. Remediation methods rely on various techniques such as zero-valent iron, nanofiltration, and activated granular sludge.

Selenium transport and metabolism in plants: Phytoremediation and biofortification implications

Richard C. Trippe et al.

Summary: This review synthesizes current knowledge on selenium transport and metabolism in plants, emphasizing the importance of selenium for biofortification and phytoremediation. Plant uptake and translocation of selenium are largely achieved through sulfur transport proteins, with selenium metabolism closely following the sulfur metabolic pathway. Unique aspects of selenium transport and metabolism in selenium hyperaccumulators are also discussed, highlighting their potential applications for biofortification and phytoremediation.

Conversion of cattle manure into functional material to remove selenate from wastewater

Nahyeon Lee et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis of cattle manure was used to synthesize biochar for removing heavy metals like selenium from water. Iron-impregnated cattle manure biochar showed superior adsorption capacity for selenate compared to other adsorbents. The adsorption process was influenced by factors such as temperature, pH, and co-existing anions.

Water resistance and biodegradation properties of conventionally-heated and microwave-cured cross-linked cellulose nanocrystal/chitosan composite films

Pei Gie Gan et al.

Summary: Cross-linking of cellulose nanocrystals/chitosan composite films using glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent through conventional heating and microwave curing was found to enhance water resistance properties and reduce water vapor permeability. The addition of CNC significantly decreased WVP, swelling, and solubility of chitosan films, especially for microwave-cured GA-cross-linked CNC/chitosan films. Biodegradation testing showed that cross-linked chitosan composite films had lower degradability rates compared to uncross-linked composites, particularly microwave-cured CNC/chitosan films, with identified degrading microorganisms of Ophiocordyceps heteropoda, Enterobacter kobei, and E. roggenkampii.
