Molecular mechanisms of pH-tunable stability and surface coverage of polypeptide films

Adam L. Harmat et al.

Summary: Streaming potential and quartz crystal microbalance measurements were used to investigate the pH dependency of the adsorption of poly-L-lysine (PLL) and poly-L-arginine (PARG) on alpha-quartz surface, which was further supported by all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. The adsorption behavior was determined by the change in the number of peptide-surface ion pairs and the repulsive electrostatic interactions between the polypeptides. Low pH favored strong adsorption and stable monolayers, while high pH resulted in weakly bound but denser peptide films with limited stability. Electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and non-specific interactions played important roles in the adsorption process.

Effects of CO2-philic nonionic polyether surfactants on miscibility behaviors of CO2-hydrocarbon systems: Experimental and simulation approach

Wei Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of nonionic polyether surfactants on improving the miscibility of CO2-hydrocarbon systems through experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that adding polyethers with different structures could reduce the miscibility pressure between CO2 and hydrocarbons. The capability of polyethers to improve oil-gas miscibility depended on the polyoxypropylene chain length and alkyl chain length. The molecular dynamics simulations revealed the mechanism of how polyethers enhanced the oil-gas miscibility.

MD simulations of oil-in-water/water-in-oil emulsions during surfactant-steam co-injection in bitumen recovery

Mohammadali Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Emulsion formation during bitumen production is a significant obstacle that requires special treatment. This paper investigates different types of emulsions and their interactions between water and bitumen to comprehensively evaluate the emulsification process in a surfactant-assisted thermal bitumen recovery method. Molecular analyses reveal that surfactants enhance the interaction between water/steam and bitumen in emulsions, resulting in higher interaction energy. Additionally, the surfactant improves the hydrogen-bonding network between bitumen polar fractions and the aqueous phase. This research provides fundamental insights into the emulsification process during surfactant-steam co-injection processes, which are crucial for the formulation of surfactants in thermal-based processes.

Molecular dynamics simulation of enhancing surfactant flooding performance by using SiO2 nanoparticles

Lipei Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the oil-water interfacial behaviors of four commonly used surfactants in oil fields at different concentrations using molecular dynamics simulation. The combination of silica nanoparticles with surfactants was explored to optimize the synergistic flooding scheme. Different types of surfactants have optimal concentrations for reducing oil-water interfacial tension, and the addition of nano-SiO2 particles significantly decreases the interfacial tension.

Study on Thermal Stability of Gel Foam Co-Stabilized by Hydrophilic Silica Nanoparticles and Surfactants

Youjie Sheng et al.

Summary: The study explores the influence of silica nanoparticles on the thermal stability of gel foams based on a mixture of fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants. Results indicate that NP concentration significantly affects the molecular interactions, surface tension, conductivity, and viscosity of the dispersions. Addition of NPs reduces the foaming ability of the solution and slows down coarsening, drainage, and decay of the gel foams under thermal action, ultimately enhancing their thermal stability.

Effects of Surfactant and Hydrophobic Nanoparticles on the Crude Oil-Water Interfacial Tension

Xu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of Span 80 surfactant and hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles on the crude oil-water interfacial characteristics. It was found that the presence of nanoparticles led to higher crude oil-water interfacial tensions, especially at low surfactant concentrations. The effect of nanoparticle concentration was less significant at high surfactant concentrations.

Simplified force field for molecular dynamics simulations of amorphous SiO2 for solar applications

Argyrios Anagnostopoulos et al.

Summary: A novel set of Lennard-Jones parameters for amorphous silica is proposed in this study, capable of accurately simulating the structure. The existence of a compressed liquid layer at the liquid-nanoparticle interface is observed experimentally, with higher density and lower self-diffusivity of the molten salt mixture in proximity to the interface. Ordered distribution of Na+ and K+ ions is indicated at the interface, suggesting the presence of an ordered double-layer.
