Biomass-Tuned Reduced Graphene Oxide@Zn/Cu: Benign Materials for the Cleanup of Selected Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs in Water

Ajibola A. Bayode et al.

Summary: The persistent increase in the amount of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (IBP) and diclofenac (DCF) in water bodies is alarming, calling for immediate action. A bimetallic plantain-based adsorbent (CZPP) and its modified form (CZPPrgo) were synthesized and found to be effective in removing IBP and DCF from water. The adsorption process was optimized by varying the initial concentration of pollutants, adsorbent dose, and pH. CZPPrgo showed the highest adsorption capacities, and the removal of IBP and DCF followed the pseudo-second order kinetics and Freundlich isotherm model. The reuse efficiency of CZPPrgo was above 80% even after four adsorption cycles, making it a promising adsorbent for water treatment.

Organophosphate pesticide residues in environmental and biological matrices: Occurrence, distribution and potential remedial approaches

Odunayo T. Ore et al.

Summary: The prevalent occurrence of organophosphate pesticides in the environment has severe adverse impacts on environmental matrices and humans due to bioaccumulation and direct exposure. Despite regulatory interventions, these pesticides are still found in human blood, soil, water, and air. Therefore, conventional and newly developed methods are needed for comprehensive mitigation. The agricultural application is the main source, and neurotoxic effects on humans cannot be ignored. Adequate measures to regulate storage and usage, as well as development of eco-friendly approaches, are recommended.

Surface equilibrium and dynamics for the adsorption of anionic dyes onto MnO2/biomass micro-composite

Martins O. Omorogie et al.

Summary: The properties of an adsorbent prepared from cost effective materials were discussed and analyzed in this research work. The study focused on Terminalia ivorensis biomass modified with MnO2 (MTIB) as an adsorbent for the removal of two anionic dyes. Surface characterization techniques were used to understand the adsorption mechanisms, and the experimental data were well fitted by Langmuir-Freundlich equilibrium and Mixed-1,2-order kinetic models. The results showed that MTIB had high adsorption capacities and could effectively treat water contaminated with toxic anionic dyes.

Carbon-mediated visible-light clay-Fe2O3-graphene oxide catalytic nanocomposites for the removal of steroid estrogens from water

Ajibola A. Bayode et al.

Summary: This study reported the development of efficient photosensitive nanocomposites made from clay, Fe2O3, and graphene oxide (GO) for the removal of steroid estrogens from water under visible-light. The main contributors to the photocatalytic efficiency of these nanocomposites are superoxide radicals and holes. The photocatalysts remain active under competitive conditions, with a slight decrease in estrogen oxidation efficiency.

Summary: This study demonstrates the efficiency of a new visible-light p-n ZnO/GO heterostructured composite catalyst supported on clay with carbon interlayer for the removal of four steroid estrogens in water. The presence of carbon interlayer and graphene oxide were crucial for the visible-light efficiency of the photocatalyst, achieving >89% estrogen removal. Analysis confirmed the formation of hydroxyl radicals responsible for photodegradation of estrogens in the presence of the photocatalytic composite.
