Comprehensive characterization of propylene carbonate based liquid electrolyte mixtures for sodium-ion cells

Andreas Hofmann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of binary electrolyte systems based on propylene carbonate and various carbonates, with 1 M sodium perchlorate (NaClO4), in terms of their electrochemical properties, physicochemical properties, and compatibility with sodium metal. The study reveals the crucial role of NaClO4 in electrolyte decomposition and gas formation, as well as the formation of coupling products in mixtures of linear and cyclic carbonates during storage with sodium metal. Gas analysis also shows the formation of CO and propylene oxide during storage with NaClO4 present. Overall, the electrolyte PC+EC+NaClO4 is identified as the most favorable system with regards to decomposition characteristics and acceptable physicochemical and electrochemical properties. However, glyme-based mixtures and sulfolane raise high toxic concerns.

Sodium-Ion Batteries with Ti1Al1TiC1.85 MXene as Negative Electrode: Life Cycle Assessment and Life Critical Resource Use Analysis

Maria Leonor Carvalho et al.

Summary: Electrochemical storage systems, particularly Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), are crucial for the ecological transition to renewable energy. However, LIBs have environmental and resource issues. This study compares Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with LIBs and finds that while SIBs have lower energy density and are less environmentally friendly, they use less critical resources. Exploring alternative technologies to LIBs is important for meeting decarbonization goals by 2050.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) of a battery home storage system based on primary data

Friedrich B. Jasper et al.

Summary: While the market for battery home storage systems is growing rapidly, there are still limited life cycle assessment studies available for quantifying their environmental benefits and impacts. This paper presents a comprehensive life cycle assessment of a Lithium iron phosphate battery home storage system, considering the impact of peripheral components. Alternative battery chemistries are also investigated, allowing for a comprehensive comparison. The study finds that peripheral components play an important role in the manufacturing impacts of the system.

Environmental Impact Assessment of Na3V2(PO4)3 Cathode Production for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Irene Rey et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the environmental impacts of a popular cathode material, Na3V2(PO4)(3), in sodium-ion batteries. The study reveals that incorporating carbon additives can provide a balance between CO2 emissions and storage capacity, but the sacrificed capacity retention hinders reuse strategies. Additionally, transitioning from fossil-based to renewable-based energy sources can significantly reduce emissions.

Attributional & Consequential Life Cycle Assessment: Definitions, Conceptual Characteristics and Modelling Restrictions

Thomas Schaubroeck et al.

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a common method to assess the potential environmental impact of human/industrial systems, with attributional (ALCA) and consequential (CLCA) being two prominent types. This article aims to argue for and select definitions for each concept, specify their characteristics, and go beyond current findings. ALCA attributes environmental impact to a product life cycle, while CLCA assesses the consequences of decisions, with different modelling restrictions and evaluation approaches for each type.
