Hybridization in the absence of an ecotone favors hybrid success in woodrats (Neotoma spp.)

Dylan M. Klure et al.

Summary: In a shrubland in California, a 3-year recapture study on Bryant's woodrat and desert woodrat revealed a high frequency of hybridization. The hybrids have comparable survival rates to the dominant parental species, indicating that ecological factors have limited influence on hybridization in this environment.

Toxin tolerance across landscapes: Ecological exposure not a prerequisite

M. Denise Dearing et al.

Summary: This study investigated the tolerances of two species of herbivorous woodrats to creosote bush, a widely distributed shrub with a highly toxic resin. The results showed that tolerance to creosote resin differed significantly between the two species and was affected by the distance from creosote bush. The findings suggest that mammalian herbivores can adapt to the specialized metabolites of plants in their diet, and this tolerance can extend several kilometers outside of the range of dietary items.

Synchronous Seasonality in the Gut Microbiota of Wild Mouse Populations

Kirsty J. Marsh et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome plays important roles in mammalian hosts, with the community composition shaping its functions. Factors driving individual microbiota variation in wild animals and how predictable or idiosyncratic they are remain poorly understood. This study on wood mice revealed consistent patterns of seasonal gut microbiota restructuring across different populations, despite involving different taxa, highlighting the importance of future research on the drivers and implications of such seasonal microbiome dynamics.

PINWORMS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH TAXONOMIC BUT NOT FUNCTIONAL DIFFERENCES IN THE GUT MICROBIOME OF WHITE-THROATED WOODRATS (NEOTOMA ALBIGULA)

Margaret L. Doolin et al.

Summary: Vertebrates rely on their gut microbiome for digestion, and changes to gut microbial communities can impact host health. In this study, the researchers investigated the effects of parasite infections on the gut microbiome of wild white-throated woodrats. While infected and uninfected animals had significantly different microbiomes in the spring, no differences were detected in the fall. However, infection was associated with differences in particular microbial taxa. Microbiome function, measured by dry matter digestibility and oxalate intake, did not differ between infected and uninfected animals. The study suggests that parasite effects on the microbiome may be difficult to detect in complex natural systems and more research in wild organisms is needed.

Gut microbiota individuality is contingent on temporal scale and age in wild meerkats

Alice Risely et al.

Summary: There are individual differences in gut microbiota composition, but these differences vary depending on the time scale. Identity has a stronger impact on gut microbiota over short periods, while year-to-year variation has a greater effect. The gut microbiota becomes more individualized and stable as individuals age.

A comprehensive evaluation of microbial differential abundance analysis methods: current status and potential solutions

Lu Yang et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of existing differential abundance analysis (DAA) tools, revealing that none of the evaluated methods are simultaneously robust, powerful, and flexible. To overcome the challenge of selecting the best DAA tool, the researchers designed an optimized procedure called ZicoSeq, which combines the strengths of existing methods and can be applied to diverse microbiome datasets for robust biomarker discovery.

Dietary shifts and social interactions drive temporal fluctuations of the gut microbiome from wild redfronted lemurs

Tatiana Murillo et al.

Summary: Animals living in highly seasonal environments adapt their diets according to food availability. This study examines the gut microbiome of wild redfronted lemurs and finds that temporal fluctuations in diet are linked to changes in the bacterial community composition. Longitudinal studies are important for understanding the adaptations and alterations of the gut microbiome to temporal fluctuations.

Seasonal shifts in the gut microbiome indicate plastic responses to diet in wild geladas

Alice Baniel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the environmental drivers of gut microbial composition in wild Ethiopian geladas, focusing on the impact of rainfall and temperature on the gut microbiome. The results showed distinct responses to dietary and thermoregulatory challenges, with rainfall influencing cellulolytic/fermentative bacteria dominance and temperature impacting energy and metabolic gene expression in the gut. These findings highlight the role of gut microbiota plasticity in providing dietary and metabolic flexibility to the host in changing environments.

Microbiome stability and structure is governed by host phylogeny over diet and geography in woodrats (Neotoma spp.)

Sara B. Weinstein et al.

Summary: This study found that geography, diet, and host genetics account for nearly 50% of microbiome variation, with diet and microbiome diversity being correlated. Host genetic background is the most significant predictor of microbiome composition and stability, indicating the important role of genetics in shaping the microbiome structure in closely related hosts.

The call of the wild: using non-model systems to investigate microbiome-behaviour relationships

Jessica A. Cusick et al.

Summary: Microorganisms living on and within animals play important roles in communicating with their hosts' brain, immune system, and endocrine axes to affect physiological processes and behaviors. Research has focused primarily on the gut microbiome and its connections with host immune, neuroendocrine, and nervous systems, as well as their effects on behavior and health. The field has expanded to include non-traditional model organisms, showing the microbiome's impact on behavior, diet, host fitness, and community-scale dynamics in wild populations.

Gut microbiome heritability is nearly universal but environmentally contingent

Laura Grieneisen et al.

Summary: Analysis of 16,234 gut microbiome profiles from 585 wild baboons collected over 14 years revealed that host genetic effects on the gut microbiome are nearly universal. The study found that 97% of microbiome phenotypes were significantly heritable, with heritability being greater in the dry season, with low diet diversity, and in older hosts. These findings suggest the potential for selection on microbiome characteristics as a host phenotype.
