Deformed Honeycomb Lattices of InGaAs Nanowires Grown on Silicon-on-Insulator for Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers

Cristian Messina et al.

Summary: In this work, a GaAs/InGaAs heterojunction nanowire platform is demonstrated for high-performance surface-emitting lasers and novel photonic topological insulator devices. The nanowires are arranged into deformed honeycomb lattices on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. The study shows the potential of using InGaAs nanowire-based honeycomb lattices for small-divergence surface-emitting lasers and topological edge mode lasers.

Progress of Photonic-Crystal Surface-Emitting Lasers: A Paradigm Shift in LiDAR Application

Yu-Heng Hong et al.

Summary: PCSEL technology, a revolutionary semiconductor laser technology that has emerged over the past two decades, shows new possibilities in Time-of-Flight (ToF) LiDAR systems. Through a comprehensive analysis of PCSEL-related scientific publications and patent documents, the development progress of PCSEL technology is reviewed. It not only has a symmetric beam profile with narrow beam divergence, but also allows for high-power operation with controllability.

Recent advances in photonic crystal optical devices: A review

M. A. Butt et al.

Summary: Phonic crystals were proposed in 1987 for manipulating light propagation through periodic and random refractive index variations. Recent developments include small radius bent waveguides, miniaturized resonator cavities, and Y-branches based on PhCs, which can lead to the development of dense integrated circuits. Further investigation is needed into this new PhC technology.

Modal Properties of Photonic Crystal Cavities and Applications to Lasers

Marco Saldutti et al.

Summary: Photonic crystal cavities allow for strong light-matter interactions, leading to applications like ultra-small and energy-efficient semiconductor lasers, enhanced nonlinearities, and single-photon sources. This paper reviews the properties of these cavities, focusing on line-defect cavities and their evolution from Fabry-Perot-like to distributed-feedback-like modes. It also discusses cavities based on Fano interference and emerging cavities for extreme dielectric confinement, promising extremely strong light-matter interactions.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of ultrashort-distance optical interconnects and demonstrates wafer-scale heterogeneous integration of LEAP lasers and Si waveguides through precise alignment, showcasing the coupling design between the two components. The LEAP lasers exhibit ultralow threshold current and direct modulation capability, enabling data transmission and eye diagram acquisition at high bit rates.
