How environmentally friendly is the analytical process? A paradigm overview of ten greenness assessment metric approaches for analytical methods

Mohamed S. Imam et al.

Summary: Green chemistry principles have been integrated into various branches of chemistry, including analytical chemistry, due to the growing concern for the environment. Analytical procedures have the potential to cause environmental damage and pose risks to operators. Therefore, it is important to consider the consequences and implications of researchers' and users' activities in analytical techniques. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the history of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC) and the existing greenness assessment metric tools. It also explores the relevance of these tools in different analytical approaches and examines their strengths and weaknesses.

Greenness Assessment of HPLC Analytical Methods with Common Detectors for Assay of Paracetamol and Related Materials in Drug Products and Biological Fluids

Ibrahim A. Naguib et al.

Summary: Green assessment of the analytical methods used for paracetamol analysis is crucial to ensure the safety of the environment and human health. HPLC methods were found to be reliable and feasible for the analysis of paracetamol in raw materials, drug products, and biological fluids. The greenest chromatographic methods for each category were proposed by Rao et al. (ESA = 76, AGREE = 0.62) and Modick et al. (ESA = 85, AGREE = 0.7) respectively. It is highly recommended to combine NEMI results with ESA and AGREE for comprehensive greenness assessment.

Levodopa-loaded nanoparticles for the treatment of Parkinson's disease

Emile F. van Vliet et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is characterized by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, causing dopamine deficiency and motor symptoms. Current treatment using L-DOPA has limitations and side effects. Encapsulation of L-DOPA into nanoparticles can protect it and improve delivery to the brain, reducing required dosages and side effects. Alternative delivery methods, such as intravenous administration and transdermal delivery, enhance therapeutic effects. This review discusses recent advances and future perspectives on NP-mediated L-DOPA delivery to the brain.

A green evaluation of ecstasy determination methods by using different greenness criteria

C. Furio-Sanz et al.

Summary: This study used five different analytical procedures to determine MDMA in seized samples and compared their greenness classification based on selected evaluation criteria. Seventeen MDMA samples were analyzed using liquid chromatography with diode array detection (LC-DAD), gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), total attenuated reflectance mid-infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and diffuse reflectance near infrared spectroscopy (DR-NIR). The analyzed procedures provided statistically comparable MDMA concentration values. However, different greenness scores were obtained using the Green Analytical Eco-Scale, the Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), and the Analytical GREEnness metric approach (AGREE), with ATRFTIR and DR-NIR identified as the greenest methods followed by IMS, GC, and LC. The greenness aspects discussed in this study are significant.
