Seismic metamaterial surface for broadband Rayleigh waves attenuation

Weijia Yu et al.

Summary: Elastic metamaterials (EMMs) have been extensively studied for their ability to control the propagation of elastic waves. However, the complex nonlinear behavior of soil poses challenges for implementing existing EMMs in practical engineering applications. To address this limitation, a seismic metamaterial surface (SMMS) is proposed for isolating Rayleigh waves over a wide frequency range. The SMMS design range is determined based on the propagation velocity of Rayleigh waves in EMMs, and a unit cell is constructed to demonstrate the desired material properties. Numerical results and scaled experiments confirm the efficacy of the new SMMS in reducing surface deformation by over 96%.

Equations and fundamental characteristics of compressional waves propagating in fluid-saturated porous materials

Mieczyslaw Cieszko et al.

Summary: The paper presents an extended analysis of the coupled system of linear equations describing compressional wave propagation in fluid-saturated porous materials and determines their fundamental characteristics. A new method of analysis is proposed, which enables the derivation of two separated differential equations describing the propagation of two attenuated compressional waves. The frequency characteristics of the waves are determined, showing that both waves can exhibit anomalous dispersion.

Analytical and numerical investigation of finite and infinite periodic lattices for mitigation of seismic waves in layered grounds

Shahab Amanat et al.

Summary: This paper studies the use of periodically arranged seismic barriers to mitigate seismic surface waves in layered soils. The research finds that by increasing the surface stiffness of the existing ground, the barriers effectively reduce the amplitude of surface seismic waves, thus mitigating damage from seismic events.

Seismic metamaterials: Generating low-frequency bandgaps induced by inertial amplification

Yi Zeng et al.

Summary: Seismic metamaterials have received significant attention in the past two decades due to their ability to control seismic surface waves. In this study, a new type of seismic metamaterial with a low-frequency bandgap induced by inertial amplification is proposed to isolate seismic surface waves. Experimental results using a metamaterial plate composed of 25 unit cells demonstrate the characteristics of the bandgap induced by inertial amplification. The imaging of flexural waves by a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer shows strong attenuation effects in the bandgap caused by the metamaterial plate. The broadband attenuation is investigated using two different types of unit cells. Finally, similar structures with inertial amplification are introduced to design seismic metamaterials for isolating seismic surface waves at low frequencies.

Novel locally resonant and widely scalable seismic metamaterials for broadband mitigation of disturbances in the very low frequency range of 0-33 Hz

Harshkumar Kamleshbhai Maheshwari et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a locally resonant Zero-Frequency Stop Band (ZFSB) metamaterial for protection against low-frequency vibrations in the range of 1-10 Hz. Through numerical simulations and laboratory experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed concept in inhibiting wave propagation in the ultra-low frequency range of 0-33 Hz is demonstrated.

Summary: This article presents a quantum graph approach to metamaterial design, where the band diagram of the graph is manipulated to understand and engineer the properties of the metamaterial. The engineered properties are demonstrated through reflection and transmission behavior at an interface. This flexible method is suitable for creating metamaterials with exotic properties.

An exact closed-form solution of three-dimensional transient Green's functions in a constrained transversely isotropic half-space

Mehdi Raoofian-Naeeni et al.

Summary: This paper presents an exact closed-form solution of three-dimensional transient Green's functions at the free surface of a constrained transversely isotropic half-space for an arbitrarily oriented surface point force of Heaviside time variation. The solution highlights the distinct features of body waves and Rayleigh surface wave in displacement components, showcasing the effects of material anisotropy. Additionally, the radial and angular displacements due to horizontal point force exhibit a special disturbance proportional to the inverse square of epicentral distance and varying linearly with time, a feature unique to transversely isotropic materials.

Lamb's problem for a half-space coupled to a generic distribution of oscillators at the surface

Xingbo Pu et al.

Summary: The study proposed an analytical framework to model the effect of single and multiple mechanical surface oscillators on the dynamics of vertically polarized elastic waves propagating in a half space. Results demonstrate that the approach can accurately model elastic waves interacting with single resonators, couples of resonators, and arrays of resonators, capturing complex dynamics phenomena such as wave conversion and wave localization.
