A partitioned combined computational method for multi-scale dynamic systems

Peng Yuan et al.

Summary: A partitioned/combined computational method based on Newmark scheme is proposed in this paper to analyze dynamic systems with different temporal scales and element scales. Generalized-a schemes are investigated and incorporated into the proposed method to effectively filter spurious high-frequency vibration content and retain the second-order accuracy simultaneously. The proposed method can decompose a complete domain into several independent computational subdomains, and several independent substructures can be combined into a complete computational structure. The accuracy, stability, energy properties, and computational efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated through theoretical analysis and two representative examples.

Equation governing the probability density evolution of multi-dimensional linear fractional differential systems subject to Gaussian white noise

Yi Luo et al.

Summary: This paper establishes the application of the globally-evolving-based generalized density evolution equation (GE-GDEE) in linear stochastic fractional differential systems. It proves that the intrinsic drift coefficient in the GE-GDEE is a time-varying linear function and can be analytically determined. By constructing a low-dimensional equivalent linear integer-order differential system, the transient probability density functions of the original high-dimensional fractional differential system can be achieved. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified through several examples.

Summary: Efficient and accurate stochastic response analysis of offshore structures subjected to ocean wave loads has been a challenging problem. In this paper, an approach is proposed by incorporating the filter approximation of random fields of sea waves with the recently developed GV-GDEE. The random wave filed is dealt with using the analog filter technique, and the coupling of high-dimensional equations is addressed using the GV-GDEE approach. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Probability distribution estimation for harmonisable loads and responses of linear elastic structures

Zifeng Huang et al.

Summary: A novel method for estimating the joint probability density functions (JPDFs) of external loads and structural responses is proposed in this study. The method is based on mean square (m.s.) stochastic calculus and utilizes a harmonicizable process approximation for the external load. The JPDFs of the Fourier coefficients are directly estimated from multiple load samples, and the load JPDFs in the frequency domain are used to estimate the JPDFs of the load at any finite time instants. By applying load representations to the dynamic governing equation of linear elastic structures, the JPDFs of the structural responses at any finite time instants can be estimated.

Yi Luo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new technique based on the globally-evolving generalized density evolution equation (GE-GDEE) for determining the response statistics of multi-dimensional nonlinear systems with fractional derivative elements subjected to Gaussian white noise. The technique allows for the direct and efficient treatment of non-Markovian system responses by deriving a one- or two-dimensional GE-GDEE based on the response quantity of interest. The effectiveness and efficiency of the technique are evaluated by comparing the results with Monte Carlo Simulation data.

Globally-evolving-based generalized density evolution equation for nonlinear systems involving randomness from both system parameters and excitations

Jian-Bing Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for capturing the probabilistic response of high-dimensional nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems involving double randomness. Using a globally-evolving-based generalized density evolution equation, a two-dimensional partial differential equation is derived to describe the evolution of the probability density function. The effective drift coefficients are determined based on data from deterministic dynamic analyses, and a new estimator for these coefficients is developed using vine copulas.

An efficient approach for dynamic-reliability-based topology optimization of braced frame structures with probability density evolution method

Jia-Shu Yang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method for solving dynamic reliability-based topology optimization (DRBTO) problems by combining the PDEM, ground structure approach, and SIMP model. The first-passage probability is considered as the objective or constraint function, and an approximate formulation based on IRPs is used for improved numerical efficiency. Adjoint sensitivity analysis is introduced to avoid extra numerical efforts, and the method of moving asymptotes (MMA) is employed to effectively solve the DRBTO problems. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated through a case study on a braced frame structure.
