Physical-hydric properties of Oxisols as influenced by soil structure and clay mineralogy

Thais Nascimento Pessoa et al.

Summary: This study characterized the soil hydraulic properties of four Brazilian Oxisols in terms of soil water retention curve and pore size distribution, and applied the van Genuchten-Mualem model to predict hydraulic conductivity. The results showed that soil properties, chemical composition, and mineralogy had an impact on porosity and saturated hydraulic conductivity.

Experimental evidence of laser diffraction accuracy for particle size analysis

Marco Bittelli et al.

Summary: Laser diffraction analysis is a fast, reliable, and automated method for detailed and highly resolved soil and sediment particle size distribution. This study compared laser diffraction with other independent methods and found that laser diffraction results were in better agreement with digital imaging than with sedimentation-based methods. The study also found that there were no statistically significant differences among the five methods for grain sizes above 100 μm. However, laser diffraction showed better agreement with digital imaging for particle sizes below 50 μm.

Mineralogy and pore size distribution of clayey Oxisols with granular structure and the effect of management systems

Lucas de Castro Moreira da Silva et al.

Summary: There is a general consensus in tropical literature that clay mineralogy, especially gibbsite, plays a crucial role in the formation of stable granular structure in Oxisols. This study aimed to investigate the influence of clay mineralogy on pore size distribution in clayey Oxisols from the Brazilian Cerrado biome. The results showed that higher gibbsite contents led to an increase in micropores and smaller pore distribution. It was also found that soil management systems can help overcome the low water availability in these soils.

An investigation in laser diffraction soil particle size distribution analysis to obtain compatible results with sieve and pipette method

David Nimblad Svensson et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that using laser diffraction method (LDM) for soil particle size analysis can yield compatible results with traditional methods, but requires transformation of clay-silt particle size cutoff. This study tested a combination of approaches for determining LDM values on soil samples and compared the results with sieve and pipette method (SPM). The findings are promising for routine soil analyses, but more research is needed for different types of soils.

Ecological intensification of cropping systems enhances soil functions, mitigates soil erosion, and promotes crop resilience to dry spells in the Brazilian Cerrado

Lucas de Castro Moreira da Silva et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess whether ecological intensification of cropping systems could promote soil coverage and decrease water erosion and soil, water, and nutrient losses. Results showed that ecological intensification led to enhanced soil environmental and agronomic functions, increased grain yield, and promoted soil and water conservation. Ecological intensification proved to be an adequate practice to boost crop resilience to water deficit in the Brazilian Cerrado.

Global Prediction of Soil Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity Using Random Forest in a Covariate-Based GeoTransfer Function (CoGTF) Framework

Surya Gupta et al.

Summary: Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) is a critical soil hydraulic parameter representing infiltration and drainage in land surface models. A new global Ksat map at 1 km resolution was derived by utilizing machine learning and remotely sensed information, showing distinct spatial patterns of soil formation processes. The validation of the model emphasizes the need for additional Ksat values to improve predictions, highlighting the shift towards considering more factors in Ksat estimation beyond just soil texture-based methods.

Estimation of soil water retention in conservation agriculture using published and new pedotransfer functions

Sixtine Cueff et al.

Summary: Conservation agriculture is developed to enhance sustainability and reduce drawbacks of conventional agricultural practices. This study presented a new dataset, assessed existing PTFs in predicting soil water retention under conservation agriculture, and developed new specific PTFs for more accurate predictions. Future research should focus on identifying relevant predictors for improving PTF performance.

Soil structure and its relationship with soybean yield

Edwaldo D. Bocuti et al.

Summary: The study found that non-irrigated soybean production areas with soil mean sand content between 100.00 and 800.10 g kg(-1) and clay content between 120.00 and 627.80 g kg(-1) showed an average soybean yield of 3,536.36 kg ha(-1). Soils with aggregates above 1.50mm in mean weight diameter and mean geometric diameter had soybean yields equal to or greater than 3,370.67 kg ha(-1), indicating that soils of similar textural groups can have different levels of soybean yield based on management and technology.
