Summary: In this study, Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes decorated ammonium polyphosphates (BAPP@Cu and BAPP@Co) were synthesized as multifunctional additives for enhancing various properties of epoxy coatings. Both BAPP@Cu and BAPP@Co improved the curing reaction and interfacial compatibility of epoxy resin, resulting in enhanced mechanical performance and heat insulation. Moreover, they significantly reduced the peak heat release rate and peak CO production rate, providing excellent fire safety to the epoxy coatings.

Facile fabrication of novel fire-safe MXene@IL-based epoxy nanocomposite coatings with enhanced thermal conductivity and mechanical properties

Summary: Developing high-performance epoxy nanocomposite coatings with excellent fire safety, thermal conductivity, and mechanical performance has been a challenging task. In this study, a multifunctional nanohybrid (MXene@IL) was fabricated using an electrostatic self-assembly strategy, and epoxy nanocomposite coatings based on MXene@IL (EP/MXene@IL) were prepared. The MXene@IL nanohybrids showed excellent dispersion and interfacial compatibility in the epoxy matrix. The addition of 2.0 wt% MXene@IL resulted in a significant improvement in fire safety, with a reduction in peak heat release rate by 43.76% and smoke factor by 65.99% compared to virgin epoxy resin (EP). Furthermore, EP/MXene@IL-2.0 exhibited an increased thermal conductivity by 21.56%. The flexural and impact strengths of EP/MXene@IL-1.0 were also improved by 10.24% and 44.73%, respectively. MXene@IL acted as a co-curing agent, facilitating the curing reaction of the epoxy nanocoatings. This study provides a feasible strategy for designing multifunctional MXene@IL-based epoxy nanocomposite coatings.

Incorporating amino-functionalized Ti3C2Tx nanosheets into an interpenetrating polymers network (IPN) to construct composite coatings shows excellent tribological properties under extreme conditions, mainly due to good dispersion, interfacial compatibility, and barrier properties of the nanosheets. This work provides a pathway to address wear/corrosion issues of organic coatings under extreme conditions.
