Dinitrogen cleavage and hydrogenation to ammonia with a uranium complex

Xiaoqing Xin et al.

Summary: The Haber-Bosch process for ammonia production from nitrogen and hydrogen requires high temperature and pressure. This study demonstrates the ability of a molecular uranium complex to efficiently convert nitrogen and hydrogen into ammonia under mild conditions.

Cation assisted binding and cleavage of dinitrogen by uranium complexes

Nadir Jori et al.

Summary: The role of alkali promoters in N-2 cleavage by metal complexes is explored using alkali bound-oxo-bridged diuranium(iii) complexes. It is found that the size of the cation affects N-2 binding affinity, with larger cations leading to decreased affinity due to steric effects. Weak N-2 binding in ambient conditions does not prevent alkali assisted N-2 cleavage to nitride from occurring. Additionally, the study presents the first example of cesium assisted N-2 cleavage leading to the isolation of a N-2 derived multimetallic U/Cs bis-nitride.

Nitrogen activation and cleavage by a multimetallic uranium complex

Megan Keener et al.

Summary: Multimetallic-multielectron cooperativity plays a key role in the metal-mediated cleavage of N-2 to nitrides. This study presents a new approach using dinuclear uranium nitride complexes with diverse ancillary ligands to promote the multielectron transformation of N-2. These complexes provide the first example of N-2 cleavage to nitride by a uranium complex in the absence of reducing alkali metals.

Facile Dinitrogen and Dioxygen Cleavage by a Uranium(III) Complex: Cooperativity Between the Non-Innocent Ligand and the Uranium Center

Penglong Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a successful example of using a uranium complex for cleaving nitrogen and oxygen under ambient conditions without an external reducing agent, providing a promising strategy for small molecules activation. The interaction between uranium and a low-valent nonmetal allows for the reduction of N-2 and O-2, offering potential for the design of new systems for activating small molecules.

Stepwise Reduction of Dinitrogen by a Uranium-Potassium Complex Yielding a U(VI)/U(IV) Tetranitride Cluster

Nadir Jori et al.

Summary: A novel mechanism of N2 cleavage to nitride by a diuranium complex is reported, involving successive one-electron transfers and cooperative potassium binding to achieve dinitrogen cleavage and formation of ammonia. The reaction also leads to the replacement of nitride moieties with oxides without disrupting the tetranuclear structure, ultimately resulting in valence redistribution.

Synthesis, structure, and reactivity of uranium(VI) nitrides

Luciano Barluzzi et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of the first nitride bridged uranium complexes containing U(vi) and provides a unique comparison of reactivity and bonding in U(vi)/U(vi), U(vi)/U(v) and U(v)/U(v) systems. The three complexes show very different stability and reactivity, with significant differences in the U-N bonding observed. Computational studies reveal different bonding schemes for the complexes, with delocalised or asymmetric bonds across the U-N-U structure.
