Unlocking the Potential of Bio-Based Nitrogen-Rich Furanic Platforms as Biomass Synthons

Rafael F. A. Gomes et al.

Summary: A new nitrogen-rich furan compound, 3-acetamido-5-acetyl furan (3A5AF), was discovered from chitin biomass. A reactive synthon, 3-acetamido-5-furfuryl aldehyde (3A5F), was developed and demonstrated to be a source of bio-derived nitrogen-rich heteroaromatics, carbocycles, and bioconjugation reagents.

Synthesis of renewable isoindolines from bio-based furfurals

Feng Xu et al.

Summary: Upgrading biomass-derived platforms to functionalized aromatics by a tandem Diels-Alder (DA) cycloaddition-aromatization strategy has attracted attention. Three challenges exist: improving the equilibrium of DA cycloaddition, controlling the regioselectivity of DA adducts, and increasing the stability of the cycloadduct. In this study, an intramolecular cycloaromatization strategy was developed using a defective Zn-BTC-SA catalyst and an acidic ionic liquid to achieve efficient and selective conversion of bio-furfurals to isoindolinones under liquid phase conditions. The protocol showed high yields and scalability.

Advances in Diels-Alder/aromatization of biomass furan derivatives towards renewable aromatic hydrocarbons

Zao Li et al.

Summary: The effective upgrading of renewable resources into high value-added chemicals through Diels-Alder (DA)/aromatization is important for sustainable economic development and the practical implementation of carbon neutral technologies. This mini-review focuses on the state-of-the-art progress in the DA strategy of bio-based furans, discussing the research developments and future challenges in the production of renewable aromatic hydrocarbons. The effects of substituent properties on the reactivity of furan dienes and the activation strategy of electron-poor furan derivatives in the DA reaction are also analyzed. The DA/aromatization mechanisms of bioderived furan derivatives are further depicted to provide an in-depth understanding.

Haber-independent, asymmetric synthesis of the marine alkaloid epi-leptosphaerin from a chitin-derived chiral pool synthon

Jessica C. Neville et al.

Summary: Chitin-derived platforms have emerged as valuable chemical entities for nitrogenous fine chemicals construction independent of the Haber ammonia process. However, much of the research in this field has focused on achiral platforms, limiting the access to enantiopure, bio-based nitrogenous chemical space. In this study, dihydroxyethyl acetamidofuran (Di-HAF), a chiral synthon easily available from chitin, has been transformed into epi-leptosphaerin, a marine alkaloid. This work extends the concept of Haber-independent synthesis to enantiopure chemical space that is not routinely accessible from existing achiral platforms.

Production of Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Biomass

A. I. Nekhaev et al.

Summary: The results of recent research on the production of aromatic hydrocarbons from biomass are summarized in this article. Different approaches to catalytic fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass into bio-oil, as well as catalysts and carriers for the hydrodeoxygenation process of bio-oil, are reviewed. It is found that noble metal-based catalysts show the best performance in converting oxygen-containing bio-oil compounds into aromatic hydrocarbons.
