FDA Modernization Act 2.0 allows for alternatives to animal testing

Jason J. Han

Summary: On December 29, 2022, President Biden signed the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 into law, which overturns the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act of 1938 that required animal testing for every new drug development protocol. While the previous mandate aimed to ensure drug and medical device quality and safety, recent scientific advancements have provided increasingly viable alternatives to animal testing. However, non-animal testing may not be an adequate substitute in the foreseeable future for certain areas such as organ replacement therapies.

Nanoprocessing of Self-Suspended Monolayer Graphene and Defect Formation by Femtosecond-Laser Irradiation

Naohiro Kadoguchi et al.

Summary: We used femtosecond-laser processing to drill nanopores and <100 nm holes in self-suspended monolayer graphene. The resulting defects were examined using scanning transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. This study provides experimental insight into atomic dynamics in graphene under laser irradiation and can help develop engineering methods for graphene and other two-dimensional materials in the future.

Engineering Optically Active Defects in Hexagonal Boron Nitride Using Focused Ion Beam and Water

Evgenii Glushkov et al.

Summary: This study systematically explores the physical processes involved in creating optically active defects in hBN using FIB, and found that the interaction between the ion beam and the substrate plays a key role in defect formation. The researchers confirmed their findings using transmission electron microscopy and super-resolution optical microscopy, and pinpointed the exact location of emitters within the defect sites. This lays the foundation for engineered applications of optically active defects in hBN with high spatial and spectral control.

Novel electrospun chitosan/PEO membranes for more predictive nanoparticle transport studies at biological barriers

Lea A. Furer et al.

Summary: The design of safe and effective nanoparticles for commercial and medical applications requires a thorough understanding of their translocation and effects in biological barriers. In this study, thin chitosan/polyethylene oxide membranes with a high porosity and nanofibrous morphology were developed using electrospinning, allowing for the cultivation of a functional placental monolayer. The transfer studies using these membranes showed significantly enhanced permeability compared to commercial microporous membranes, and the transfer data of nanoparticles was highly similar to ex vivo perfusion studies of intact human placental tissue. These newly developed membranes could contribute to establishing physiologically relevant in vitro biobarrier transfer models with superior permeability for a wide range of molecules and particles.
