Ion-Selective Assembly of Supertetrahedral Selenido Germanate Clusters for Alkali Metal Ion Capture and Separation

Zhou Wu et al.

Summary: Supertetrahedral chalcogenido (semi)metalate cluster-based frameworks can selectively capture alkali metal cations and offer new perspectives for metal ion capture and separation. Two model compounds, (C(2)C(1)Im)(7)[Cs@GeII4(GeIV4Se10)(4)] (1) and (C(2)C(1)Im)(10)[Na-5(CN)(6)@Cu-6(Ge4Se10)(4)(Cu)] (2), were prepared ionothermally to demonstrate their separation potential during crystallization. Compound 1 contains the largest reported binary selenido germanate cluster and exhibits high selectivity for Cs+ ions. Compound 2 has a two-dimensional network structure and shows exclusive preference for Na+. This work provides valuable insights into the selective incorporation of alkali metal ions into supramolecular aggregates of supertetrahedral chalcogenide clusters for new ion trapping techniques.

Ionothermal Approach to Homo- and Heteroleptic Alkylation of Tellurido Mercurate Clusters for Assembly in Lamellar Crystal Structures

Mirko Tallu et al.

Summary: The selective methylation and butylation of chalcogenidometalate clusters using imidazolium-based ionic liquids is a mild and effective method for increasing their solubility. By utilizing the ionic liquid (C(10)C(1)Im)[BF4], functionalized tellurido mercurate clusters with terminal alkyl ligands were synthesized. The crystal structures and optical properties of these compounds were investigated.

Ionothermal Access to Defined Oligomers of Supertetrahedral Selenido Germanate Clusters

Zhou Wu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the formation of finite cluster oligomers with supertetrahedral architectures through ionothermal syntheses, successfully generating unprecedented dimers and tetramers of the [Ge4Se10](4-) anion. These oligomers exhibit lower average negative charges, reducing electrostatic interactions and allowing the salts to dissolve readily in common solvents.

Highly Soluble Supertetrahedra upon Selective Partial Butylation of Chalcogenido Metalate Clusters in Ionic Liquids

Bertram Peters et al.

Summary: Two generally different types of supertetrahedral clusters have been identified: one with an organic ligand shell, low charges, and high solubility, while the other type is ligand-free, with high charges and low solubility. By synthesizing and fully characterizing two salts with a minimal number of organic substituents, high solubility in CH2Cl2 or CH3CN was achieved, indicating nearly unaffected band gaps in the optical absorption properties. These findings were rationalized and explained through high-level quantum chemical studies.

A Discrete Ligand-Free T3 Supertetrahedral Cluster of Gallium Sulfide

Sarah Makin et al.

Summary: A discrete ligand-free T3 supertetrahedral cluster of gallium sulfide has been successfully synthesized in this study using the superbase DBU and the neutral surfactant PEG-400 as the reaction solvent. The results indicate the potential of using surfactants as solvents for the preparation of new compounds containing supertetrahedral clusters.
