Electrophotocatalytic Reductive 1,2-Diarylation of Alkenes with Aryl Halides and Cyanoaromatics

Liang Zeng et al.

Summary: Here, the authors report a new electrophotocatalytic intermolecular reductive 1,2-diarylation of alkenes using aryl halides and cyanoaromatics. The reaction demonstrates a broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility, and excellent selectivity. Mechanistic investigations suggest a radical process initiated by the reductive generation of aryl radicals from aryl halides and terminated by radical-radical coupling with cyanoaromatic radical anions.

Iron-Catalyzed Oxidative Cyclization of 2-Amino Styrenes with Alcohols and Methyl Arenes for the Synthesis of Polysubstituted Quinolines

Seok Beom Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, an iron-catalyzed oxidative cyclization reaction was used to synthesize polysubstituted quinoline via the reaction between 2-amino styrene and alcohol/methyl arene. Low-oxidation level substrates, such as alcohols and methylarenes, were converted to aldehydes in the presence of an iron catalyst and di-t-butyl peroxide. The quinoline scaffold was then synthesized through imine condensation/radical cyclization/oxidative aromatization. The broad substrate scope and various functionalization and fluorescence applications of quinoline products demonstrated the synthetic ability of our protocol.

Unified Electrochemical Synthetic Strategy for [2+2+2] Cyclotrimerizations: Construction of 1,3,5-and 1,2,4-Trisubstituted Benzenes from Ni(I)-Mediated Reduction of Alkynes

Sagar Arepally et al.

Summary: Electrochemical access to organometallic redox reagents allows for selective synthesis of various benzene derivatives with different regioisomers. A unified electrochemical strategy is presented for the selective cyclotrimerization of terminal alkynes to access both 1,3,5- and 1,2,4-regioisomeric trisubstituted benzene derivatives. The regiocontrol can be switched by the addition of a carboxylic acid.

Electrochemical Rhodium-Catalyzed C-H Cyclodimerization of Alkynes to Access Diverse Functionalized Naphthalenes: Involvement of RhIV/V and RhI Dual Catalysis

Ziyi Guo et al.

Summary: This study reported the first electrochemical rhodium-catalyzed C-H cyclodimerization of alkynes for the direct construction of functionalized naphthalenes. The practicality and synthetic value of this strategy were demonstrated through the readily accessible scale-up synthesis and transformation of the products. Detailed mechanistic studies showed that electricity played a crucial role in the electrochemical disproportionation process, generating and maintaining catalytically active Rh-IV/V and Rh-I species that facilitated the direct C-H activation.
