Atomic-Scale Site Characterization of Cu-Zn Exchange on Cu(111)

M. Mammen et al.

Summary: The surface morphology and the atomic distribution of Cu and Zn on Cu(111) were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Zn islands gradually dissolve, causing extensive element intermixing at room temperature and alloying of Zn at Cu lattice sites. An interlayer element exchange between Zn submonolayers in direct contact with Cu was observed and found to be driven by lattice strain and facilitated at the perimeter of Zn edges. The findings provide new insights into atomic-scale exchange for Zn/Cu bimetallic surfaces.

Demystifying the Chemical Ordering of Multimetallic Nanoparticles

Dennis Johan Loevlie et al.

Summary: Multimetallic nanoparticles have highly tunable properties, but the computational study of their chemical orderings is challenging. This study presents a methodology that combines an improved bond-centric model and a genetic algorithm to accurately predict the most stable chemical orderings of multimetallic nanoparticles. The methodology is applicable to various particle sizes, shapes, and metal compositions.

Laser-generated high entropy metallic glass nanoparticles as bifunctional electrocatalysts

Jacob Johny et al.

Summary: High entropy metallic glass nanoparticles synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in acetonitrile exhibit amorphous alloy phases with slight surface segregation, stabilized within graphitic shells. The incorporation of moderate amounts of Mo enhances catalytic activity, likely due to defect generation by atomic size mismatch. These carbon-coated HEMG NPs demonstrate superiority over their crystalline analogues in electrocatalytic energy conversion.

Local Order in AgAuCuPdPt High-Entropy Alloy Surfaces

Henrik H. Kristoffersen et al.

Summary: The local order on the surfaces of AgAuCuPdPt high-entropy alloy is significantly increased at the (100) surface, and to a lesser extent at the (533) and (111) surfaces, compared to the bulk structure. This is influenced by the segregation of certain elements and the distribution of nearest-neighbor atom pairs on the surfaces.

Surface segregation in the AgAuCuPdPt high entropy alloy: insights from molecular simulations

Chinmay Dahale et al.

Summary: This study investigates surface segregation in high entropy alloys (HEAs) using Monte Carlo-Molecular Dynamics simulations. The results reveal that Ag atoms preferentially segregate to the surface in the equimolar AgAuCuPdPt HEA, while Au atoms mainly exist in the subsurface layer. Pt atoms are not found on the surface layer in all systems. Furthermore, the analysis of each surface site shows that a finite number of chemically unique clusters are formed, which play a significant role in catalytic activity.

Platinum Dissolution in Realistic Fuel Cell Catalyst Layers

Konrad Ehelebe et al.

Summary: Research has shown that specific Pt dissolution increases significantly with decreasing Pt loading; compared to experiments in aqueous model systems with flow cells, the measured dissolution in GDE experiments is considerably lower; further reduction in Pt dissolution is observed by adding a membrane onto the catalyst layer.

Design of compositionally complex catalysts: Role of surface segregation

Alberto Ferrari et al.

Summary: Complex alloys with excellent mechanical properties are promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis, but controlling surface segregation remains a challenge. Significant surface segregation is found at high temperatures in candidate complex catalysts, which can strongly affect their catalytic properties.
