Polymer collapse of a self-avoiding trail model on a two-dimensional inhomogeneous lattice

C. J. Bradly et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of random impurities on the collapse of a flexible polymer in dilute solution using extended interacting self-avoiding trails on the triangular lattice. The results show that the presence of impurities disrupts the maximally dense phase, transforming it into a denser globule phase.

Coil-to-Globule Transition in Polymeric Solvents

Yuci Xu et al.

Summary: The coil-to-globule transition of a polymer in a polymeric solvent was studied using self-consistent field theory, revealing different transition behaviors for short and long-chain solvents. A scaling analysis showed that the transition point for any chain length combination is a universal function of a scaling variable, with a crossover occurring at a certain point. Universality was also observed in the density profile and interface characteristics of the globule at the transition point.

Characterizing the Interplay between Polymer Solvation and Conformation

Debdas Dhabal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the collapse transition of a hydrophobic polymer solvated in water and in a nonpolar solvent through molecular simulations. The results show that an external potential can trigger the transition by perturbing the hydration waters of the polymer, and the bottleneck to collapse is the formation of a sufficiently large cluster and its collective dewetting process. Interestingly, the mechanistic details of the collapse transition are qualitatively similar in water and in octane.
