Single-atom catalysts for electrochemical N2 reduction to NH3

Summary: The increasing demand for clean energy and growing concerns regarding environmental sustainability have led to greater attention devoted toward the production of clean fuels via green chemistry. Ammonia, as a green alternative to fossil fuels, has gained great interest worldwide for electrochemical reduction in atmospheric nitrogen (N-2) to produce cheap, environmentally friendly and reliable ammonia (NH3). Single atom catalysts have shown to be more effective than nanoparticles and have been extensively studied for the nitrogen reduction reaction. This review covers recent advances in noble metal and non-noble metal single atom catalysts for electrochemical reduction in nitrogen from 2018 to 2022, discussing catalyst efficiencies, coordination preferences, and theoretical studies. Insights into current challenges and considerations for future studies are also provided.

Architecting Bismuth Molybdate Nanoparticles with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies and High Bismuth Concentration for Efficient N-2 Electroreduction to NH3

Summary: In this work, a novel bismuth molybdate nanocatalyst with sufficient oxygen vacancies and high Bi concentration is synthesized, and it is demonstrated to be an excellent electrocatalyst for N-2 electroreduction reaction (NRR). The as-synthesized BiMoO-OVs shows a high Faradaic efficiency of 16.38% and a NH3 yield rate of 3.65 μg h(-1) cm(-2) at -0.4 V (vs RHE) in neutral electrolyte, outperforming most Bi-based NRR nanocatalysts. Importantly, it also exhibits excellent electrochemical durability for at least 24 hours. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for designing low-cost and high-performance Bi-based catalysts.

Summary: By anchoring an atomic catalyst above the phosphorene-like puckered surface of germanium selenide (GeSe), superior catalytic activity for nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR) can be achieved, with the Ru dimer decorated GeSe monolayer showing the best performance. The effectiveness of this activity is attributed to the Ru dimer filtering the states of GeSe, leading to the activation of the adsorbed N-2 bond efficiently.

Machine-learning-accelerated discovery of single-atom catalysts based on bidirectional activation mechanism

Defective Fe3GeTe2 monolayer as a promising electrocatalyst for spontaneous nitrogen reduction reaction
