Mononuclear nickel and copper complexes as electrocatalyst for generation of hydrogen from acetic acid

Arpita Barma et al.

Summary: This article reports two mononuclear complexes, [NiL] (Complex 1) and [CuL] (Complex 2), as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction using acetic acid as the substrate. These complexes have been synthesized under mild conditions and characterized by various methods. The X-ray structure of Complex 1 shows a square planar geometry around the nickel center. Both complexes effectively reduce protons to generate hydrogen. Control experiments have been carried out to understand the role of these catalysts and their relevance in this regard. The turnover frequency (TOF) values for Complex 1 and 2 are determined as 653.1 and 777.5 s-1, respectively. Hydrogen is evolved through the reduction of the metal center followed by the formation of metal hydride species.

Ligand-Mediated Hydrogen Evolution by Co(II) Complexes and Assessment of the Mechanism by Computational Studies

Manaswini Raj et al.

Summary: Two novel dinuclear cobalt complexes featuring redox-active ligand have been synthesized and investigated for their catalytic activities in electrocatalytic proton reduction. The experimental results demonstrate high catalytic activity for both complexes and the catalytic activity depends on the nature of substituents on the ligand. Gas chromatography analysis and computational studies provide insights into the mechanistic pathways and the energy changes in the molecular hydrogen formation reaction.

Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction and H2 Evolution by a Copper (II) Complex with Redox-Active Ligand

Jingjing Li et al.

Summary: The process of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction and H-2 evolution from water has become a global solution to energy consumption and environmental degradation. The role of ligands in catalysis has been studied to promote electrocatalytic reactivity. In this study, a copper (II) complex with redox-active ligand was developed, which showed great performance in CO2 reduction and H-2 evolution due to the cooperative effect between the central Cu (II) ion and the ligand. Moreover, the addition of a proton source greatly enhanced the electrocatalytic activity.

Deriving the Turnover Frequency of Aminoxyl-Catalyzed Alcohol Oxidation by Chronoamperometry: An Introduction to Organic Electrocatalysis

Shannon L. Goes et al.

Summary: Organic electrosynthesis is a popular tool for driving and examining redox reactions, with recent advances often utilizing electrocatalysts to improve selectivity and efficiency. A laboratory experiment was developed to introduce students to mechanistic techniques in electrochemistry using aminoxyl-catalyzed alcohol oxidation as a case study. The experiment employs cyclic voltammetry for qualitative assessment of catalytic turnover and introduces students to chronoamperometry for quantitative determination of catalysis rates, using safe and accessible reagents.

Selenium tethered copper phthalocyanine hierarchical aggregates as electrochemical hydrogen evolution catalysts

Indherjith Sakthinathan et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the development of non-precious metal catalysts, specifically n-octylselanyl substituted copper phthalocyanine hierarchical aggregates, for the hydrogen evolution reaction. By systematically studying the structural and morphological characteristics of these aggregates, the coexistence of covalent and non-covalent linkage between CuPc skeletons at the nanoscale regime is demonstrated. These hierarchical aggregates exhibit high stability and excellent electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen production under acidic conditions.
