Otolith age determination with a simple computer vision based few-shot learning method

Andrea Rakel Siguroardottir et al.

Summary: In this study, a computer vision-based few-shot learning method is proposed for otolith age determination in European plaice, Atlantic cod, Greenland halibut, and haddock. The method outperforms previous state-of-the-art approaches by training shallow models using a vision encoder from CLIP as a feature extractor. It is computationally efficient and data efficient, achieving better performance than fine-tuning on the same data.

Automating fish age estimation combining otolith images and deep learning: The role of multitask learning

Dimitris Politikos et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of deep learning for automatic fish age estimation, proposing a convolutional neural network and enhancing performance with multitask learning by predicting fish length. The network achieved high accuracy in age prediction, particularly for younger age groups, and showed improved performance for older age groups with multitask learning.

Automatic interpretation of salmon scales using deep learning

Rune Vabo et al.

Summary: The study applied Convolutional Neural Networks with transfer learning on a dataset of Atlantic salmon scales, achieving high accuracy in predicting fish origin, spawning history, and sea age, but lower accuracy for river age. Comparison with human expert readers showed higher agreement in sea age prediction and lower agreement in river age, indicating the difficulty of the task.
