Mantle sources of ocean islands basalts revealed from noble gas isotope systematics

James M. D. Day et al.

Summary: This study reviews the noble gas isotope systematics of major ocean island basalt suites, highlighting the importance of considering spatial and temporal variations as well as sample media in the evaluation. Results indicate that different types of ocean island basalts originate from distinct mantle regions with varying geological heritages. The research also suggests that ancient deep isolated reservoirs are likely to be relatively minor present-day mantle features.

Holocene volcanic activity in Anjouan Island (Comoros archipelago) revealed by new Cassignol-Gillot groundmass K-Ar and 14C ages

Xavier Quidelleur et al.

Summary: The Comoros archipelago has attracted attention due to the submarine volcano east of Mayotte and the associated seismic crisis. Anjouan Island, located in the central part of the archipelago, is crucial for understanding the relationship between volcanism and geodynamics. New data indicates younger volcanic activity on Anjouan than previously thought, occurring in pulses at various intervals.

Melting and metasomatism in West Eifel and Siebengebirge Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle: Evidence from concentrations of volatiles in fluid inclusions and petrology of ultramafic xenoliths

Andrea Luca Rizzo et al.

Summary: An integrated study of ultramafic xenoliths from West Eifel and Siebengebirge volcanic fields in Germany reveals clues on the composition and evolution of specific portions of the Sub-Continental Lithospheric Mantle. The different characteristics of olivine rocks in these regions indicate varying evolution histories and metasomatism events in the lithospheric mantle beneath the Central European Volcanic Province.

Spatial Characteristics of Recycled and Primordial Reservoirs in the Deep Mantle

M. G. Jackson et al.

Summary: This study reevaluated the spatial distribution of geochemical reservoirs and their link to mantle convection, indicating that high-He-3/He-4 is not geographically confined to the LLSVPs. The research suggests that the generation of high-He-3/He-4 is dependent on plume dynamics rather than geography, while hotspots sampling recycled continental crust are closely linked to LLSVPs.

Partitioning of Fe2O3 in peridotite partial melting experiments over a range of oxygen fugacities elucidates ferric iron systematics in mid-ocean ridge basalts and ferric iron content of the upper mantle

Fred A. Davis et al.

Summary: The study investigates the behavior of Fe2O3 partitioning between silicate melts and coexisting peridotite mineral phases during basalt generation, revealing the influence of temperature, Fe2O3 concentration, and oxygen fugacity on the partitioning process. The findings suggest that the MORB source may require higher oxidation levels than previously thought, with thermodynamic models supporting this idea. The results indicate the possibility of redox melting occurring between depths of 200 to 250 km.
