Mineral and bone disorder after kidney transplantation: a single-center cohort study

Li Sun et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate and identify the influencing factors of mineral and bone disorder (MBD) one year after kidney transplantation (KT). The results showed that MBD after KT was characterized by increased prevalence of hypophosphatemia and bone loss, persistent vitamin D deficiency, and partially decreased parathyroid hormone and bone turnover markers. The femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) was positively correlated with body mass index and postoperative vitamin D, and negatively correlated with postoperative parathyroid hormone. The lumbar spine BMD was positively correlated with body mass index and preoperative triglycerides, and negatively correlated with preoperative osteocalcin and CTx. BMD loss was positively associated with glucocorticoid accumulation.

Natural History of Bone Disease following Kidney Transplantation

Hanne Skou Jorgensen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the evolution of bone disease in the first year after kidney transplantation. The results showed that changes in bone turnover, mineralization, and volume were related to steroid exposure and ongoing disturbances of mineral metabolism. Optimal control of mineral metabolism may be crucial for improving bone quality in kidney transplant recipients.

Progression of Aortic Calcification in Stage 4-5 Chronic Kidney Disease Patients Transitioning to Dialysis and Transplantation

Roosa Lankinen et al.

Summary: The progression of abdominal aortic calcification in chronic kidney disease patients is similar across different renal replacement therapy modalities, including transplant recipients. The rate of increment is associated with mortality and waiting time for transplantation in transplant recipients. The increment is correlated with mean left ventricular mass index and phosphorus levels during follow-up.

Improvement of Mineral and Bone Disorders After Renal Transplantation

Ana Carina Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the development of mineral and bone diseases after renal transplantation and their association with coronary calcification. The results showed that renal transplantation improved bone and mineral abnormalities and that the severity of calcification was determined by the pretransplant period.

Bone Mineral Density and Aortic Calcification: Evidence for a Bone-vascular Axis After Kidney Transplantation

Camilo G. Sotomayor et al.

Summary: CKD-MBD and vascular calcification are common in kidney transplant recipients. This study found a high prevalence of BMD disorders in KTR, with an independent inverse association between BMD and AAC suggesting the existence of a bone-vascular axis post transplantation.
